Drawn in from the first page

I was given a free ebook version from the author for an honest review and all I have to say is it was very good. I was drawn in from the first page and couldn't put it down. I am now on the sequel to it, Charmed Again, and find it is just as good.

The story plot is good versus evil but with a twist. There is a good love story, because what good book doesn't have that. I won't reveal the end but it is worth reading. Every little twist and turn in the book made me not able to put it down and I found myself staying up way longer than I should just to see what happened next.

Lindy Zart is now my new favorite author!

I got this book a couple weeks ago for my Kindle. It took interesting enough, so I put it up towards the top of my "TO READ" list (some books end up on the list for years). Finally, about a week after I got it, I decided to read it. It helped that I was heckled by Tawnya. I read the first paragraph and sighed - convinced I just got myself into some silly teen drama that I'd have to force myself to read. I'll admit, I put off reading the book for a couple days because of it. ...but then I started it. Actually started it.

One word to explain what happened once I passed page one: DAMN. That's right, I said it. I had to force myself to put the book down a few times, because I swear I stopped breathing in certain parts. (Lindy Zart is obviously trying to kill me, just want you all to know this)

All and all, it was a great story. Truly it was. I was able to get into the characters, and I liked them. They felt real.

Still Charmed!

I received this book as a gift in February by the author and I still find myself thinking about it. I so enjoyed all the characters, Taryn, Creed and Luke. The character Taryn was entertaining and I loved her spunkiness and comical side. The other two otherworldly characters Creed and Luke had their own agenda which included Taryn and the battle between good and evil ensues. Charmed was a constant page turner and was hard to put down. Once I finished reading Charmed, I quickly purchased the second installment Charmed Again! I highly recommend this paranormal novel. P.S., I developed a soft spot for Creed.

Here I am years later book 7 and still in love with this series. As I said in a previous review Kazzy and Dom will never see their happy ending lol. Sad to say but so very true and it has a lot to do with the level of stubbornness that you get from the both of them. Many read this series and like to blame it on the Fates, the Oracle, whomever but in reality Dominic and Kiera are stubborn a-holes! But I love my stubborn a-holes teehee. I have been a dedicated reader from the start. From the lengthy two and a half page room/dress descriptions to now a page and a half of descriptions, max! This entire series is a stellar read and I have now read through the series three times. Each character feels like a friend to me. They each bring a different personality to the table weather they are huge flirts, mean a**es, or sneaky. Everyone is different and brings a different aspect to the story. I wrote all of this to say that July has passed......LOL where is part 2!!!!!!???!!!! I really need part 2 because I just HAVE to know if this going to work and how is it going to work because the explanation still made absolutely no sense to me! Please oh please Stephanie put me out of my misery by releasing part 2 already! Thank you so very much!

Affirmation cards encourage more love to come into your life

Charming 2-sided affirmation cards with colorful illustrations are very upbeat. Initially I thought these cards were created for single people to help bring them true love however these cards are more about love in general. The cards remind you to show love to your family & friends as well as your significant other.
Some of my favorite affirmations:

Sophie, who at 39 hears the ticking of her biological clock getting louder, is delighted with the house, despite some family opposition to her inheriting it, and intrigued by Connie's matchmaking from beyond the grave. Moriarty has created a cast of appealing characters that she deftly juggles through various plot threads, notably Sophie's languishing love life and the mystery itself, previously revealed only to family members when they turned 40, ultimately revealed to all. Not bad but not nearly as enjoyable as her other books

I think Liane Moriarty is a great author and I love her other books, but I was disappointed by this one. I still enjoyed reading it (hence the 3 stars), but it didn't captivate me the way her other books did.

The characters in this story lacked dimension and there were too many of them! I usually enjoy stories that are told from multiple points-of-view, but there were entirely too many characters in this story to keep track of. I actually had to draw a family tree of the characters so that I could keep them straight.

Because there were so many of them, none of them seemed all that interesting or sympathetic and I didn't really care about their fate, with the exception of one or two. In addition to the lack of multi-dimensional characters, the mystery isn't much of a mystery... it's pretty obvious from the beginning that the sisters had more to do with the disappearances than they let on, and the author alludes to this early on. The story behind the disappearance actually ends up being quite interesting, but you don't read about until the last few pages. The majority of the book is spent describing random events in a group of irritating characters' lives.

I still think LM is a great author, and her style of writing is easy and entertaining to read, so I don't regret buying this book. I didn't think her writing was quite as sharp in this book as in her others, but there were still enough moments where her wit and insight shone through to make it an enjoyable read.

In conclusion:
-If you LOVE Liane Moriarty and have read all her other books, go ahead and read this one because it's not a bad way to pass a few afternoons.
-If you were unsure about her other books, don't bother with this one. You'll be upset you wasted your money so move on to a different author!
-If you have never read one of her books, I highly suggest you do, but don't start with this one because it's by far the weakest.

One of my top 10 for 2016

It’s only 3 weeks into 2016 and I just read my favorite book of the year–I think. Well, how can you not love a book that starts out like this?

‘Do you really think we can get away with it?’
‘If I didn’t think so, I wouldn’t be suggesting it, would I?’
‘We could go to jail. That’s my third worst fear. First funnel-webs, then childbirth, then jail.’
‘Neither of us is going to jail, you ninny. One day we’ll be sweet little old ladies and we’ll probably forget that it didn’t happen the way we said it did.’
‘I can’t imagine us as sweet little old ladies.’
‘It does seem unlikely.’

In this one chapter you have mystery, danger, humor and friendship. The novel centers around a mysterious (fake) island called Scribbly Gum Island where in 1932, during the depression, a baby is found alone in a house with a kettle boiling on the stove and a marble cake sitting out. The parents of the baby, Alice and Jack Munro, are missing. Then it fast forward to the present day and all the ramifications from this event. Some people benefited nicely, while others suffered.

The author does an amazing job of introducing each character. Although Sophie Honeywell and her love-life or lack there of, is the “main” character. The novel is told in third person omniscient point of view and believe me when I tell you, each character is richly developed.

Subjects include: Postpartum depression, mystery, sex, body issues, murder and vibrators. Hey, how can you go wrong?

This novel is worth reading alone for the inner and outer dialogue that goes on with Sophie. Which is absolutely hysterical. Not to mention Margie and her two men named Ron which again, is priceless.

Will the great mystery be solved? Will Sophie find true love that her Aunt Connie predicted her once she moves into the house where it all began? You’ll just have read it to find out.

Published first in 2005 & again in 2014, this is a steal for only $1.99 on kindle. Oh, and add the audio immersion reading to hear the actors speak with Australian accents.

Satisfying as well as Entertaining

I found this book a fulfilling read. It is entertaining, with twists here & there. More importantly I found it thoughtful and thought provoking. In other words, it is far more than entertaining, making it a worthwhile endeavor. Liane is obviously an astute observer of people and human behavior. Often, I had an ah-ha moment, sometimes reinforcing my own opinions and often causing me to scratch my head and to bank that thought for more consideration. The story line is interesting. I found the character development even more intriguing and believable. So happy to "discover" Liane Moriarty and have already purchased another book authored by her.

Breathtaking recipes!

A quotation from the Introduction, written by Jean-Francois Revel, of the Academie Francaise: "By imitating the masters, one cannot of course reach their level of perfection, but one often escapes the routine of one's own banality. You are going to discover the French art, one which has never been so alive, in the following pages. May then and from now on your dream, inspired by Alain Ducasse, direct your hands, as fallible as they may be!" Rather edgy, I think, but probably accurate.

First, this is a thousand page volume, genuinely a Culinary Encyclopedia, pulled together by a team of chefs under famed chef, Alain Ducasse. There are some wild elements to it, such as lobster recipes from page 422 through page 491 (almost 70 pages worth of lobster works!). Some nice features at the close of this volume: a glossary of terms, some basic recipes (consomme, stocks, jellies, juices, etc.), serving quantities associated with different dishes, and a seasonal table of meats, vegetables, fruits.

Second, though, it's the recipes that make this book fascinating. Here, I'll say it at the outset. There are some (many, even most) recipes here that I would never try. I'm too impatient and don't know all the skills needed for some of the dishes. Take, for example, Wild Roasted Hare Saddle. The process of preparation and cooking is complex--from cutting up the hare and reserving its lungs, kidneys, heart, etc. Next, each segment of the recipe is complex, with steps one does not usually experience, such as shredding the hare's shoulders with pliers. You create a sauce, with a first and a second thickener, plus a garnish for the finale. I imagine that this would be delicious when eaten, but I get exhausted looking at the process of preparation.

However, there are some recipes that seem like they are doable and would be fun and taste good. Acacia Blossom Fritters for one. You begin with a bunch of acacia flowers and then create a fritter batter Put the acacia flowers in the batter and fry in grapeseed oil. Looks tasty!

This is an absolutely massive volume, and even though many recipes won't get into my household's menus, they are enchanting to read. For one thing, I admire the work of the team that would put these dishes together in a restaurant. For another, it makes me appreciate more what goes into the work of a "starred" restaurant.

So, even though the bulk of these recipes don't fit my modus operandi of cooking, I will try some and will appreciate what goes into fine dishes more than I ever did before.

Beautifully written

The encyclopedia, illustrated with 1,000 color photographs, is organized around 100 "basic" ingredients. From acacia to zucchini, they were selected to inspire professional chefs, as well as experienced home cooks. We find the explanations quite easy to follow, and we like the measurements being given both in ounces and grams. What we also appreciate are the "Finish & Presentation" instructions, if you follow them, you will certainly get a round of applause from your guests.

The great thing about reading through this heavy book--over ten pounds!--which deserves space in your library as well as your kitchen, is that you'll feel, with very little experience, that you can actually succeed in recreating Ducasse's cuisine at home

A shrunken reprint

This book IS what I thought it would be, and it is NOT what I thought it would be. It IS Alain Ducasse's Culinary Encyclopedia, but it is NOT the original version. This is the shrunken version. Literally. The original is large and lush, with beautiful photography and high quality glossy paper. That book measures 12 x 9.4 inches, weighs 12 lbs. and costs a lot of money.

This version is 9.6 x 8 inches, is printed on inferior paper, and the photography doesn't reproduce well at that size. It costs a third of what the original does.

On the plus side, it IS a complete reprint, which means that exactly the same information is in the book. Every page is exact, just smaller.

This type of book (the original, that is) is generally for the collector or professional chef. Any cookbook over a hundred bucks has a pretty rarified market. At the very least, this reprint makes the recipes and the techniques of one of the world's greatest chefs accessible to a wider audience. Just don't expect it to be the big, lush volume you hoped it was. You get what you pay for.
