Comprehensive, informative & enjoyable

As the title implies, this book focuses on managerial leadership exclusively; a topic at the center of management research for several decades now and therefore, the information and research available is simply huge. However, despite the extensive research, writing, and theories that seem to litter the field, Gary Yukl manages to cover all relevant aspects in a clear and straight-forward manner. As he mentions in the Preface, "the topic of leadership effectiveness is of special interest..." and therefore, there is a wealth of ideas, guidelines and processes designed to transfer the theoretical research available to practice. Each chapter (with the exception of the introductory and closing chapters) includes review questions and at least one (1) case study. Additionally, most chapters include one or more "Applications" sections that provide practical guidelines for managers based on the theory/research discussed.

Yukl's book does not make for easy reading nor is it a 'basic' book (for that, you're better off with Northouse's Leadership: Theory and Practice) and you would probably enjoy the book (and gain more) if you progress to it from a fundamental-level book.

The introductory chapter (The Nature of Leadership) is an excellent primer on the concept of managerial leadership; the 'types' of theories that deal with leadership; and the difference between management and leadership. I also found the chapters on Strategic Leadership by Executives (Chapter 12) and Developing Leadership Skills (Chapter 13) extremely useful as I do a lot of leadership development programs and I find myself returning to Yukl's text again and again to develop effective programs for my clients.

(Since it is not possible to see the Table of Contents, I'm including hee a brief synopsis)

The book is organized in 15 Chapters:
1) Introduction: The Nature of Leadership - as I mentioned above, this is an excellent primer.
2) The Nature of Managerial Work - Yukl highlights the latest development in management research including managerial roles (Mintzberg) and situational theories.
3) Perspectives on Effective Leadership Behavior - focusing on behavior-based theories.
4) Participative Leadership, Delegation, and Empowerment - includes Vroom & Yetton's models as well as an excellent section on delegation that has become my 'bible' on the topic.
5) Dyadic Role Making, Attributions, and Fellowship - Leader-member Exchange theory, Attributions and Implicit theories.
6) Power & Influence - clear and focused presentation of all aspects of power and influence as they relate to managerial leadership.
7) Managerial Traits & Skills - unlike other textbooks you find on Leadership, Yukl's treatment of the trait-based theories is innovative and useful. He includes the requisite historical development of trait-based theories, but makes the topic more relevant to practitioners by also highlighting trait-based theories used today in selection (the Big Five, for example) and also sections on different types of intelligences (emotional, social, etc.).
8) Early Contingency Theories of Effective Leadership - presents and discusses theories of Fiedler; Path-Goal, Situational Leadership, Leadership Substitutes, Multiple Linkages and Cognitive Resources.
9) Charismatic & Transformational Leadership - very well written chapter introducing the concept of `Charisma' in some detail and follows with transformational theories and applications.
10) Leading Change in Organizations - another excellent chapter that manages to condense a difficult topic without losing value.
11) Leadership in Teams and Decision Groups - the impact of leadership on group processes, decision making and overall team effectiveness.
12) Strategic Leadership by Executives - this is an extremely useful chapter on everything related to strategic leadership in an organization: definitions, barriers, challenges, tools, and processes.
13) Developing Leadership Skills - this is my `blue-print' for developing all the leadership development programs I conduct. To date, I have been unable to locate a better source.
14) Ethical Leadership and Diversity - a concise introduction to the topic including a discussion of gender and cultural issues and their impact on leadership styles and behaviors.
15) Overview and Integration - the closing chapter brings the whole book together through a comprehensive summary of all the topics; ideas on an "Integrating Conceptual Framework" and an overview of the state of the field.

Some page numbers please?

I am using this book in a class right now, and that is the only reason I would ever buy this book. For starters, I bought the Kindle version. It does NOT include the page numbers in any form, shape, or list. Second, you cannot jump from chapter to chapter using the 'search this book' feature. Come on, I just paid 45 bucks for this book. At least make it easy for me. If you buy this, read it online and place bookmarks on each chapter start. That helped me. Otherwise, I paid a lot and got a little.

Much better textbooks...

The textbook covers the material in excruciating detail. The problem is that it does so with a small font, light print and no sidebars whatsoever. Make sure that you have a fresh highlighter too as you are going to need it!

If I had to describe the textbook in one word it would be: clinical

It covers the material, but by the time you are finished with a chapter, you breathe a sigh of relieve.

Fnally a very uplifting view of the world.

My wife asked for this book and I ordered it a while ago. True to Amazon's word it arrived the day of it's actual release.
The way she made it into a series of many short stories with very high resolution pictures made it a very good read.
I was also impressed with her fairness of other views which is far from normal in todays Political books. She has a very uplifting view of life along with respect of where she came from. My wife and I highly recommend this book regardless of which side of the aisle you are on.

Smiles, Tears and Hope - Must Read

Dana's book is a refreshing and fun recounting of a remarkable journey from the ranch to the West Wing. She shares amusing and heartfelt stories from her days at the White House sparring with reporters in the Brady Press Briefing Room and advising the President in the Oval Office. Dana's honest and relatable writing helps readers understand what happened inside the White House during consequential events of the Bush Administration. In addition, her optimism and thoughtful advice for those just getting their start in politics leaves you hopeful that civility and good cheer inside the Beltway is still possible. Washington really needs more people like Dana.

I had Book 1 on my TBR for some time. When i saw the bundle i snapped it up. Boy was I glad i did! Love the new (to me) author. I can't wait to read the rest of the stories. Even though it is centered around the Porn Industry, it was done in a manner where you forget. They are just business men helping and loving each other and their "family". This series really shows that family can be much larger and more loving when you choose your family. Each can be read as a stand alone, but you fall in love with them all and want to know all the stories. Can't wait for the rest!

Love the All Cocks Men!!!

Gay for Pay (Book 1) is about the couple, Christopher and Lincoln. They work for the All Cocks porn company. Christopher is living with his best friend and his boyfriend to deal with the trauma of his past, an accident that caused him to lose the one person who meant the world to him. Christopher sees a flyer about auditions to become an All Cocks man and decides that it is a way to get him some financial independence. He meets Lincoln and they become friends. After a while they begin to have feelings for each other, but Chris is still dealing with the guilt of his girlfriend’s death. Will Christopher and Lincoln be able to get over their past mistakes and follow the feelings of their hearts? I really enjoyed this story.
Fame and Fortune (Book 2) Victor and Andrew have been together for the last ten years after meeting and knowing that they were meant for each other. Now, ten years later they have a successful porn company and a life that they love. When Michael comes in for an interview to apply for a job, both Victor and Andrew a pull towards the man that makes them question whether they are being true to each other. When things happen to Michael that triggers memories of his past Victor and Andrew circle the wagons and do what they can to protect Michael, and to show him that trusting again is possible. Will it be enough to get Michael to open up his heart to the two men who want to cherish it? I love these three and can’t wait to read about the other men of All Cock.
How to Deal (Book 3) Jon and Kory’s story is told in Book 3. Jon is a police officer and Kory is one of the All Cocks men. Jon meets Kory while on a call and is immediately intrigued by him. He manages to get past Kory’s walls and they begin to go out. Kory has a lot of issues that they need to work through before Jon and Kory can have their happily ever after. All of these men have kept me reading and looking forward to finding out about the other All Cock men.

This gospel retelling is relatively faithful in style, time line, and events to the four canonical gospels-though Pullman injects a very Pullman-like spin on it by splitting Jesus Christ into two men, among other creative twists. Twin babies are born of the virgin Mary, one called Jesus, the other Christ. After a childhood in which Christ is a goody-goody and Jesus the popular one, Jesus and Christ continue down separate but intertwined paths, with Christ sneaking around, spying on Jesus's ministry and writing down his every word and deed. Jesus becomes a philosopher-revolutionary and Christ is the politically savvy brother, who ultimately proves naïve. Pullman's gospel version reveals how the politics and structure of the institutional church were plotted by power-hungry men, who used the renown of Jesus and his well-meaning, devoted brother Christ as pawns in their corrupt game-a critique that will be familiar to readers of His Dark Materials. This is a tale of (almost comedic) mistaken identity and good intentions gone horribly awry. Readers will find the parables, the Good Samaritan, healings, and the Sermon on the Mount, among other familiar scenes.

About the Author
Philip Pullman was born in Norwich, England, in 1946. He has won many awards, including the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Book of the Year Award. His acclaimed trilogy, His Dark Materials, has been published in thirty-nine languages. . The Amber Spyglass, the trilogy’s astonishing finale, was the first children’s book in history to win the Whitbread Book of the Year Award. It was also nominated for the Booker Prize. When he is not writing books, Pullman enjoys drawing, woodworking, and playing the piano. He lives with his family in Oxford, England.

This is a great retelling. So good it must be true!

This is a wonderful and involving read! This is a retelling of the story of Christ. This is not his dark materials or anything like it so if that's what you want this ain't it. However if you want a really good really interesting story of Christ as you have never read before this is a must. I read this every year at or around Xmas now.

Publication of this book caused a deal of controversy, with some offended readers labelling it as blasphemous. That such readers took offense is understandable. In Pullman's version, "Jesus" and "Christ" are brothers, and the former is manipulated into dying so that the latter can leave writings that can be used to establish a new religion. The plot stays close enough to the traditional biblical tales that it takes relatively small changes for the author to weave an entirely different (and secular) account.

In understanding the author's intent, it is worth noting that this book was published as #14 a series on ancient myths. While interpretations may vary, I take the author's account as a way of capturing the dual nature of the historical Jesus as viewed from today's perspective -- not the man vs. the god, but the itinerant faith- healer vs the unwitting founder of a new religion. I found the book neither offensive nor particularly interesting, but am glad if it opens some reader's eyes to possibilities more likely than the supernatural myths of 2000 years ago.

Odd but worthwhile

The only other Philip Pullman stories I've read are His Dark Materials, which I completely loved. This is entirely different in how it is written and the type of story being told. I found the most interesting part of the story the epilogue where Pullman discusses his own meaning behind the text and the background of why he wrote this. It's a strange read but offers a fascinating, very different take on the Gospels. It's also a very quick read so I think it's worthwhile.

The great house and grounds of Althorp in Northamptonshire have been home to the Spencer family for nearly 500 years. They first leased farm land in the area of grazing in 1486, and in 1508 Sir John Spencer acquired the 300-acre estate on which he built the first house. Since then, Spencers have lived and died at Althorp for twenty generations, and the Park has now taken on an added significance as the burial place of the most loved princess of the twentieth century.

Charles Spencer, who became the ninth Earl in 1992, has a deep love and knowledge of the house, reflected in the fact that he acted as a guide there when he was just twelve years old and in the tremendous redocorative work he has undertaken in recent years to restore it to its former glories. In 1998 there was further major work with the adapting of the quite beautiful Stable Block--once home to 100 horses and forty grooms--into a center for visitors incorporating an exhibition celebrating the life of Diana.

Earl Spencer has written a fascinating account of the house that combines the details of art and architecture (Althorp has one of the greatest private art collections in the country, including paintings by Van Dyck, Rubens, Reynolds, Stubbs and Gainsborough) with a personal appreciation of all its qualities. He also provides a first-hand description of the many changes that have occurred in recent years. With splendid photography, some of it from Althorp's archives and some of it specially commissioned, this new book offers the perfect guide to one of England's greatest houses.

This account of Althorp, his family seat, by Charles, the ninth earl Spencer, only scratches the surface of its 500-year history. Nevertheless, whether he is describing the sleepless nights of his childhood, the ticking of clocks "always ... too subtle a sound, getting absorbed in the oak of the floorboards and the fabric of the tapestries," or appraising the forbidding character of his grandfather, the "Curator Earl," Spencer casts a candid, evocative light on his subject.

Indeed, Spencer's own efforts on the estate have been considerable. First comes the business of repairing the predations of his "short-termist stepmother," Raine, the countess of Dartmouth, who has laid down wall-to-wall oatmeal carpet in a 115-foot-long Tudor picture gallery. Now comes the death and burial on the estate of his sister, Diana, the princess of Wales. That Charles must now curate the family home as a site of global mourning is a trial quite the equal of anything the estate has ever faced.

Subtitled "The Story of an English House," the book has a structure, dividing the subject into buildings, grounds, family history, and collections, that is entirely conventional. Yet Spencer surprises by packing in many details about the social and political vicissitudes that shaped his family's wealth and taste. In doing so, he eschews his grandfather's regrettable elitism, while losing none of the old man's dedication to the family's heritage. About the Author
Charles, Viscount Althorp, became the ninth Earl Spencer on the death of his father in 1992. Since then he has undertaken extensive refurbishment of Althorp and supervised the changes made to accommodate the many thousands of people who wish to visit the home and grounds since the death of his sister. He was educated at Eton College and obtained his degree in Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Beware, Kindle Edition has no photographs

Enjoyed Charles Spencer's history of his family and their ancestral home Althorp but was very disappointed that there were no accompanying photographs as was in the print edition. Only giving this two stars as I feel rather cheated as in many places the narrative assumes the reader is also referencing photographs of the rooms or works of art being discussed. Without any accompanying photographs, this Kindle Edition of the book is disappointing.

Having been a huge admirer of Diana, Princess if Wales, I jumped at the chance to read this book. I was not disappointed! It was a most interesting history of Althorp and of the Spencers through the years. Anyone who is interested in English history and English historic houses this is a must read. And not just because it was Diana's ancestral home. I highly recommend Althorp: The Story of an English House!!

A quick look at English aristocracy and the estates that are passed down through generations. Upkeep increases as revenue declines, and we see works of art sold at auction, often way below their true value. A sad state of affairs, but there are many who struggle to preserve this history. Diana's resting place is here.
