Black Swan - Best American Historical Romance Ever

I first read this book when I was in my teens, and it left a lasting impression as I have remained interested in this style of writing ever since. Day Taylor's writing style really makes you connect with the characters and leaves you unwilling to put the book down for even a second. Adam Tremain is a man who could make any woman swoon and his incredible story from adolescense in the pre-war south to his privateering adventures as a man to be reckoned with leave you wanting more from this writer. I regret to say that I have lost my copy of this book over the years, but consider it to be one of the best books I have ever read, and reread.

I wish I could give this book more stars. Gone With the Wind was always the standard that I measured every story in this genre up to, and The Black Swan certaininly measured up to my very high standard. I read this book for the first time about eleven years ago, and since that time have read it many times over. this is a compliment to the author since I rarely, if ever, read a book more than once (with the exception of Gone With the Wind). My copy was so worn and well-read that I foolishly tossed it out! I did not realize I couldn't just go out and replace it! I think this book should be re-printed. Now, this book is back in my possession,thanks to sellers of used books online. I will never be so silly as to toss it out again! I can recommend this book to anyone who loves civil war love stories, or any historical fiction about the south. If you can locate a copy, never let it go!.

It is quite an adventure story of a young girl with a strong will and honest convictions. Although the daughter of a prosperous slave-breeder, she falls in love with a man determined to risk his life in order to lead slaves to freedom. Day Taylor is an incredible author who describes the deep south in intricate detail. It is a classic story of love encountered, lost, found, lost again. This story moves from New Orleans to the Caribbean forests, including some exciting encounters in New York and terrific historic detail of Nassu's port. Plus, it has a riveting ending that will make it impossible to put this book down even for a second. If you are like me and love historic fiction, please read this book. Also read the sequel Moss Rose.

I really wish Day Taylor's novels were still in print. Everything she writes is good!

Timeless, a GR8! book, a 5 star+ **********

Today, it is so hard to find a really good book anymore. I just picked this one up, 'The Black Swan' in a garage sale for a quarter, and lucky me I also got the 'Moss Rose'(the Black Swan returns),too, which I have started reading now, and with only a few pages in I am already hooked, AGAIN!

Reading 'The Black Swan', I couldn't put it down. I just had to turn one page then another and another; I just had to know what was going to happen next. My husband was calling himself a 'Book Widower'! I told him the good news was... I also have the second book of the pair and all he could do was GROAN! Husband, What husband?! Ha,ha! But seriously, what a treat to find two such a page turners for just one quarter each!!!! They are must haves for your library!

If you are tired of reading the trash a lot of authors pump out today, do yourself a favor and get these two books, they may date back to 1980 but they are timeless and you will be very pleasantly enthralled! As obviously all my sister reviewers agree.

Photo-Guide to Consolidated's Slab-Sided Warrior!

Though the B-24 will never win any aerodynamic beauty prize, it was the most-produced American warbird of all time, some 20,000 Liberators being manufactured. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder! The incredibly prolific David Doyle offers up an 88-page photo-guide to that singular warplane in this 2012 Squadron/Signal release.

Since various models of the basic B-24 design were developed and served with the USAAF, USN, RAF, RAAF and other air forces, B-24 LIBERATOR IN ACTION examines each model in turn beginning with the XB-24, YB-24, LB-30A, Liberator I, B-24A, Liberator II, B-24C, B-24D, Liberator III, PB4Y-1, C-87, F-7 and on through to the B-24M. To rectify its combat shortcomings and fulfill newly-assigned combat roles such as photo-recce and maritime patrol, the basic design was tweaked and many of those major and minor changes are depicted in the 244 b&w and color photographs found in the book.

Of those 240-odd photographs, 92 are in color. I've read many B-24 books over the past 50 years so, maybe, 50% of the pix in the Doyle book are new to me.

Having said that, B-24 LIBERATOR IN ACTION is one of the very best, most comprehensive B-24 photo-guides I've come across. When you factor in seven Don Greer color profiles and the $18.95 price tag, purchasing the Doyle book is a no-brainer. Recommended.

Very helpful if you're thinking of getting into the subscription box business!

I've been thinking about starting a subscription box business but have held back because I assumed it was a passing fad. This book was awesome, actually, because it addresses that fear and gives you a couple of ways you can make your company more sustainable as people's interests change. The fact that it's based on real interviews with box owners was helpful. Most useful were the formulas on how to calculate subscriber churn rate, etc. I would recommend this book for that detailed information alone.

An insightful and thoroughly comprehensive look at what in means to be a "furry". I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the furry fandom, whether they're just learning of it for the first time or have been part of it for years. Through engaging personal narratives (I loved Cutter Cat's touching description of the "why" of fursuiting) and fascinating new studies (Nuka's "By The Numbers" had me quoting stats out loud to anyone who would listen), this book clears up many of the misconceptions surrounding furries, and explains why so many people continue to fall in love with this community.

If you're a fan of ace attorney then there's no way you won't enjoy this. I actually bought the original Japanese one when it first came since I wasn't aware that they would make an English version. The original concept designs are really fun to look through! And the coloring is superb.

The purpose of this text is to introduce parallel programming techniques. Parallel program-ming uses multiple computers, or computers with multiple internal processors, to solve a problem at a greater computational speed than using a single computer. It also offers the opportunity to tackle larger problems; that is, problems with more computational steps or more memory requirements, the latter because multiple computers and multiprocessor systems often have more total memory than a single computer. In this text, we concentrate upon the use of multiple computers that communicate between themselves by sending messages; hence the term message-passing parallel programming. The computers we use can be different types (PC, SUN, SGI, etc.) but must be interconnected by a network, and a software environment must be present for intercomputer message passing. Suitable networked computers are very widely available as the basic computing platform for students so that acquisition of specially designed multiprocessor systems can usually be avoided. Several software tools are available for message-passing parallel programming, including PVM and several implementations of MPI, which are all freely available. Such software can also be used on specially designed multiprocessor systems should these systems be available for use. So far as practicable, we discuss techniques and applications in a system-independent fashion.

The text is divided into two parts, Part I and Part II. In Part I, the basic techniques of parallel programming are developed. The chapters of Part I cover all the essential aspects, using simple problems to demonstrate techniques. The techniques themselves, however, can be applied to a wide range of problems. Sample code is given usually first as sequential code and then as realistic parallel pseudocode. Often, the underlying algorithm is already parallel in nature and the sequential version has "unnaturally" serialized it using loops. Of course, some algorithms have to be reformulated for efficient parallel solution, and this reformulation may not be immediately apparent. One chapter in Part I introduces a type of parallel programming not centered around message-passing multicomputers, but around specially designed shared memory multiprocessor systems. This chapter describes the use of Pthreads, an IEEE multiprocessor standard system that is widely available and can be used on a single computer.

The prerequisites for studying Part I are knowledge of sequential programming, such as from using the C language and associated data structures. Part I can be studied immediately after basic sequential programming has been mastered. Many assignments here can be attempted without specialized mathematical knowledge. If MPI or PVM is used for the assignments, programs are written in C with message-passing library calls. The descriptions of the specific library calls needed are given in the appendices.

Many parallel computing problems have specially developed algorithms, and in Part II problem-specific algorithms are studied in both non-numeric and numeric domains. For Part II, some mathematical concepts are needed such as matrices. Topics covered in Part II include sorting, matrix multiplication, linear equations, partial differential equations, image processing, and searching and optimization. Image processing is particularly suitable for parallelization and is included as an interesting application with significant potential for projects. The fast Fourier transform is discussed in the context of image processing. This important transform is also used in many other areas, including signal processing and voice recognition.

A large selection of "real-life" problems drawn from practical situations is presented at the end of each chapter. These problems require no specialized mathematical knowledge and are a unique aspect of this text. They develop skills in using parallel programming techniques rather than simply learning to solve specific problems such as sorting numbers or multiplying matrices.

Topics in Part I are suitable as additions to normal sequential programming classes. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), we introduce our freshmen students to parallel programming in this way. In that context, the text is a supplement to a sequential programming course text. The sequential programming language is assumed to be C or C++. Part I and Part II together is suitable as a more advanced undergraduate parallel programming/computing course, and at UNCC we use the text in that manner.

Beginners Guide to Parallel Programming on Clusters

Clusters of Computers have become an appealing platform for cost-effective parallel computing and more particularly so for teaching parallel processing. At Monash University School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, I am teaching "CSC433: Parallel Systems" subject for BSc Honours students. The course covers various communication models and languages for parallel programming. Cluster Computing is one of the focused topics of this course and I found two books that suits well for this course--both published by Prentice Hall in 1999. The first one is: "High Performance Cluster Computing" by R. Buyya (editor) that I use for teaching cluster computer architecture and systems issue. The second one is "Parallel Programming" by B. Wilkinson and M. Allen that I use for teaching programming clusters using message-passing concepts. I found both books complimentary to each other.
B. Wilkinson and M. Allen book discusses key aspects of parallel programming concepts and generic constructs with practical example programs. Each concept has been explained using figures and flow diagrams. The programs illustrated mostly in C using generic parallel programming constructs and popular parallel programming interfaces such as Threads, PVM, and MPI. The authors have also created an excellent web resources home page that offers presentation slides, program source codes, and instructors manual. All these tools make teaching parallel programming course, a pleasing experience. I have no hesitation in recommending this book for anyone serious about teaching parallel programming on clusters.

The binding wasn't sealed, so the book is essentially two pieces and very difficult to open or carry around without it possibly falling apart. Pages are in good condition.

A static compensator (STATCOM), also known as static synchronous compensator, is a member of the flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices. It is a power-electronics based regulating device which is composed of a voltage source converter (VSC) and is shunt-connected to alternating current electricity transmission and distribution networks. The voltage source is created from a DC capacitor and the STATCOM can exchange reactive power with the network. In addition, it is used to improve the voltage stability of a network.

This book covers STATCOMs from different aspects. Different converter topologies, output filters and modulation techniques utilized within STATCOMs are reviewed. Mathematical modeling of STATCOM is presented in detail and different STATCOM control strategies and algorithms are discussed. Modified load flow calculations for a power system in the presence of STATCOMs are presented. Several applications of STATCOMs in transmission and distribution networks are discussed in different examples and optimization techniques for defining the optimal location and ratings of the STATCOMs in power systems are reviewed. Finally, the performance of the network protection scheme in the presence of STATCOMs is described. This book will be an excellent resource for postgraduate students and researchers interested in grasping the knowledge on STATCOMs.

Dr. Farhad Shahnia received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. He is currently a Lecturer in Curtin University, Perth, Australia. His professional experience includes three years at Research Office-Eastern Azerbaijan Electric Power Distribution Company, Tabriz, Iran. Prior to joining Curtin University, he was a research fellow in Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. He has published 5 book chapters, 8 journal papers and 55 conference papers.

Dr. Sumedha Rajakaruna received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was a Lecturer at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka until 2000 and then an Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore until 2007. Since 2007, he is at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. He is the founding Director and Lead Designer of Green Electric Energy Park at Curtin University, a state of the art renewable energy laboratory built at the cost of over $1.2 million in 2012. He is the supervisor of more than 10 PhD graduates and has published 2 book chapters and over 40 research articles.

Dr. Arindam Ghosh received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Calgary, Canada in 1983. Currently, he is a Professor of Power Engineering at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. Prior to joining the Curtin in 2013, he was with Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia from 2006 to 2012 and with the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, India, for 21 years. He is a fellow of INAE and IEEE. He has published 1 book, 6 book chapters and more than 350 papers in international conferences and journals.

A fantastic text for those in the medical field who wish to give evidence-based professional advice on nutrition.

I am a medical student who purchased this book hoping for a professional resource to guide patients toward proper nutrition during sports activities, on specific diets, and during disease states. This book is an excellent resource for this purpose.

Pros:
- Chapters are divided into major diseases by organ or organ system (GI tract contains IBD, celiac sprue, tropical sprue, IBS, diverticulosis; there are separate chapters for pancreatic disease and liver disease, etc.)
- Most major diseases are covered with evidence-based advice using references given at the end of the chapter
- A few guidelines are given at the end of the chapter (only a few, not enough for each disease)
- The pathophysiology is briefly covered for each disease
- Clinical correlations are often practical and current
Cons:
- The book is written in British English, which normally isn't a problem for me, but there seem to be an overabundance of less-than-obvious crossovers ("hypolactasia" rather than lactose intolerance for those of us who spilled the tea into the pond)
- The organ-based divisions could be frustrating to someone without a background which covers the anatomy
- Not all disease systems are covered, but this is an excellent general textbook for understanding

I would also highly recommend the sport and exercise nutrition volume as it does an excellent job of distinguishing evidence-based understanding of nutrition from "bro science" while providing adequate scope and level of detail for most exercise pursuits.
