Item as described. In good shape. I would not read this book unless absolutely required. It is outdated. I had the professor in college that wrote the book. She is far from a great communicator and the book refers to WAY outdated methods of communication and technology type.

Essential Reading

The Intelligent Asset Allocator sits right next to 'Stocks for the Long Run' and 'The Intelligent Investor' on my bookshelf; it's a classic.

I enjoy thinking about asset allocation and how to best structure a portfolio. No matter what studies you may trust the most, asset allocation is clearly a major driver of portfolio returns. This book invites you to deconstruct your assumptions and build them back up again. I would have liked a book ten times as long, but then I really enjoy seeing all the intricacies. Even so, there is a lot hinted at in these pages that gives you further directions to explore. Even if you are familiar with diversification, various asset classes, portfolio theory and the reasons for indexing, there is a lot of value here. I will admit the book is growing somewhat dated with respect to the time frame it discusses, but the book loses nothing in relevance.

I am still building assets, and because this book referenced both standard and aggressive growth portfolios (I employ a portfolio very similar to the 'Madonna' Portfolio he mentions, with a couple key differences), I knew I was on the same trail as the author, which was incredibly gratifying for me. For those with different backgrounds, the insights you find relevant may differ.

I will say the book would benefit from a greater discussion of various portfolios. How important is it to mimic the market (or rather, what is the risk associated with failing to look like the market, which is true to some degree of every portfolio?) What is the role of TIPS in a portfolio (or rather, when does Inflation become a central risk? I maintain that you only need them in retirement, but am eager to hear different opinions.) How much risk should you take with the credit portion of your portfolio (I use intermediate term treasuries myself - covariance vs equities is just too superior not to, even with the risk of rising rates. Again, I like to hear other opinions.)

With reference to portfolios I've read about: the 'Gone Fishing Portfolio' was also amazingly comprehensive, if not as focussed on portfolio building as the IAA, and the portfolio it proposes is pretty solid. Swenson's books are very good, and his suggested portfolio is top notch, if history is any judge. Swedroe suggests a pretty bullet-proof portfolio, so even though returns won't blow you out of the water, they should be solid, and the ride should be serene (which can be very important in a retirement portfolio, as lack of volatility both increases SAFEMAX and decreases the odds of running out of money early... i.e. the trade-off for lower returns can yield a higher cash flow.) All of these authors are worth the read.

One of the top 4 books that should be on every saver/investor's book shelf!

I first read this back in the 1990's when Bill Bernstein first published it online in manuscript - and it has been my guide ever since! I consider this to be one of the top 4 books any investor should have ... to be read from cover to cover. While math, statistics and charts are an essential part of this book, don't be scared off by them - they illustrate the very points Bernstein is trying to drive home - and it's all based on historically empirical data, not hypothetical scenarios. Bill is a very good writer and even if you don't "get" the math or statistics, the text is all you really need. (BTW, the other 3 books I recommend are Bernstein's "The Four Pillars of Investing," Benjamin Graham's "The Intelligent Investor" and Jack Bogle's "Common Sense on Mutual Funds.")

This book is pretty technical. If you don't have the experience or knowledge of the economics and statistics used it is not terribly accessible. If you don't, Bernstein's other book, which he wrote because he was told this one was too technical to be accessible to most people, The Investor's Manifesto. I haven't fond anyone interested in investing who's had a hard time getting through it.. And it's short.

Absolute gem

This is the most heavily consulted volume on my shelf as a nonclinical toxicologist. Once I had been trained well enough in the fundamentals (clinical pathologist mentorship and Meyer & Harvey 3e, which I still regularly consult), I found the fourth edition of this text absolutely invaluable after I bought it a few years back. Once I found out the fifth was being written, it was all I could do to wait for it!

For those who are unfamiliar with the text (as one complaint reflected for the last edition), it follows a "dry" outline format: this is by design. It is an organization of often highly ambiguous or pleiotropic phenomena into a rational format for interpretation of clin path data- beautifully uncluttered. It is probably fair to say that it isn't intended as an introductory treatment of clinical pathology. For the latter purpose, scientists without clinical backgrounds should read the outstanding Chapter 26 of A. Wallace Hayes 5e, by Drs. Bob Hall and Nancy Everds. Especially if you have never had the treat of working closely with clinical pathologists.

Having received and exercised the fifth edition for several months, I'm very pleased that the transition to the new edition has been the result of seamless improvements. There was considerable updating and augmentation of content without losing sight of the volume's scope. For example, the chapter on erythrocytes has been substantially improved by Dr. Charlie Brockus, with expanded differentials and relevant tables.

Another benefit is that now I have the still excellent 4e at home for less frequent consultation there!

Do NOT get Kindle edition!

I've been using the hardcover version of this laboratory reference book for many years and it is my "go to" book for trying to interpret abnormal values on laboratory tests. Since I work at many different clinics I've been carrying the book around with me. Just got a new Kindle Fire HD and was excited to download the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to haul the book around anymore - but discovered the Kindle edition has NO PAGE NUMBERS. This means the index in the back (which is where I always start my search) is useless. You can't look up "albumin" and then go to the page which will give you differentials for low (or high) albumin. And if you try typing in what you're looking for in the "search" function, most of the searches find nothing. (For instance, I typed in "phosphorous" to see where it was discussed in the book and the search came back "no matches found.") Plus who wants to waste time typing out long medical words?

In short, the Kindle edition is useless unless you just want to do some general reading through the chapters (which I personally don't have time to do). I wish whoever published it to Kindle had thought of how the book is actually used!

Great Reference

At first I did not like the note-style outline and lack of pictures, but after reading through a few chapters I found that the layout made organization quick and easy to understand. I definitely plan on taking this book with me after I graduate because it is a good reference text.

Excellent Read!

Buy it AND read it. I'm not a huge fan of self-help books and I only spend a small portion of my "spare" time reading, despite the fact that I own a significant number of books (no problem with acquisition, just reading them). That being said, I have had trouble putting this book down. The writing style is both easy to follow and playful at the same time, which certainly helps to keep my interest. Thinking about it now, I'm not sure that "self-help" is the correct categorization for this book. While I've found aspects of the book to be helpful to me personally, I think the most interesting pieces are the astute observations on life, in general, and how quickly and easily we can be distracted from what truly matters to us as individuals. This book has provided me with a different way of thinking and viewing things - from small, everyday tasks to grandiose ideas. I can't think of a single person that I know personally who wouldn't enjoy reading this book. Most would probably benefit from it as well. Highly recommended.

I'm halfway through Screw the Zoo and already have a page of notes and original quotes! A few favorites: "The reason that self-doubt is so dangerous is that it is at the heart of inaction"; "If your mind is a negative place, your reality will become negative...but if your mind is a positive place, incredible things can happen"; and "We're wired for external validation. We seek it out, and crave it like a drug addict. And just like an addict, if you want to reach your maximum potential, you’re going to need to get off the crack."
McRoberts has successfully explained his concept in understandable, well-outlined segments; I LOVE the lists and guided self assessment exercises. The imperfection list - perfect! (pp 44 & 45)

Here-and-now speculative yarn involving chaos theory and statistical prediction, from the author of the fine Doomsday Book (1992), etc. Employed by the HiTek company, Sandra Foster is trying to develop a theory that can predict how and why fads and trends begin. But her attempts to computerize her data (mostly in the form of magazine and newspaper clippings) are constantly frustrated by the awful Flip, the erratic, forgetful, careless interdepartmental assistant. Still, Flip does lead Sandra to meet biologist Bennett O'Reilly, who thinks he's discovered a hidden factor within current chaos theories. As Flip blunders about--ghastly black lipstick, weird clothes, faddish accessories, attitude problem and all-- Sandra and Bennett decide to set up a joint project to test their ideas on the behavior of a flock of sheep. HiTek's management heartily approves--such a project might well win the coveted Niebnitz Grant. Sandra and Bennett learn that a bellwether sheep unconsciously acts as a catalyst to determine the entire flock's behavior. Bingo! Flip, while seeming totally incompetent, unknowingly acts as a human bellwether, causing fads and trends to crystallize around her as she lurches chaotically through life. Go with this flow

Probably the most enjoyable book I've read that asks the question: why do people jump on the latest bandwagon only to discover that it doesn't make them any happier than they were before? The protagonist-narrator of the story is a social scientist, working for a research corporation and trying to find how fads begin. The corporation wants to figure out how to use her research to make new fads, and of course gobs of money in the process. The weekly meetings presided over by "management" are hilarious.
This book reads so easily that you might be deceived into thinking that it's simply written. Hardly. Willis has worked very hard to tie together a number of disparate elements. Some of the most enjoyable parts of the book are the short descriptions of dozens of past fads -- everything from coonskin caps to bobbed hair to mah jong. In the process, Willis tells us a lot about what we're willing to do to "belong."
I noticed from previous reviews that some people were disappointed with this book because it really isn't science fiction. It's true, this is not traditional science fiction, with a futuristic setting, new technology, etc. But Willis's remarks that relate fads to chaos theory are very well thought-out. In giving the reader something new to think about, she meets the basic test of science fiction. And in creating an enjoyable, perceptive story, she meets the challenge of being an exceptionally good writer.

Well, HEAVEN FORBID!

You know, it really irks me when a wonderful book like Bellwether comes out and all these "well-read" types come out of the woodwork to tell you how awful it was because it wasn't like her other work, didn't turn out how they wanted, maybe wasn't as deep as something else she'd written....Please read it anyway! I loved this book! I have read it many times, loaned it to many friends, bought it for birthdays...you name it! I love the fact that it's not like her other books. I love that Connie Willis can allow herself to branch out. She is a fine author in any incarnation, and just because it doesn't focus on spaceships or aliens or time-travel, doesn't mean it can't be science fiction. You got your science. You got your fiction. Voila! And if nothing else, the ending will make reading the book all worthwhile.

Join the flock

Don't be fooled by the collage cover of Mandelbrot patterns, moth and human hair - this book is all about the sheep. A semi-scientific, extremely funny, geeky love story emerges from chaos, which is embodied by a fad-obsessed, incompetent mail clerk named Flip.

If you've ever entered an IKEA through the front entrance (instead of sneaking through the marketplace), you'll understand the "sheep" reference. People walking along assigned pathways, eyes glancing downward nervously, following large black arrows on the floor, not daring to stray from the path, much less walk in the opposite direction.

Sandra Foster works in a "Dilbert" type corporation, trying to work out what causes fads, from hairstyles to crossword puzzles. Bennett O'Reilly works for the same corporation, studying chaos theories. When these two get together thanks to a misdelivered package, things really start to get chaotic, compounded by the hiring of an assistant for Flip, who is (gasp) a SMOKER, and Management's efficiency meetings.

Studying the behavioral patterns of a flock of sheep proves to be a lot harder than it looks (almost as hard as filling up a Corporation request for a paper clip) but through some coincidental occurrences they learn the secret of the wooly herd-followers the hard way.

An enjoyably easy read, I especially liked the information on various fads at the beginning of each chapter. Like most of the other people who've read this book, you'll probably like it.

Good Book

This is a must for all serious Eleanor Powell fans. In depth information and great pictures. Its a shame it wasn't printed on better quality paper and the photos are not glossies. But she is (unfortunately) a niche interest movie star. The book however was a small edition print and is worth at least 3 times its published value and will only increase. So a good investment and a pleasure for a fan.

A nice detailed story of the life and career of Eleanor Powell.

This book about Eleanor Powell is difficult to find and much
too expensive (now) because it was apparently self-published
in 1997 by the authoress (Alice B. Levin). Back then it sold for $24.95.
On the third page it says the publisher is Empire Publishing,
and that additional copies could be obtained by writing to Alice Levin.
It probably was never reprinted in paperback. Ms. Levin knew
Eleanor Powell personally My copy is a wonderful 168-page large-print
book with lots of photographs. By careful research on the Internet,
you might be able to find this title for a reasonable price.
