About the Author
Gordon Nickel is adjunct professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He began his study of Islam at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he completed an M.A. in South Asian Islam and wrote a thesis on Shah Wali Allah's principles of Qur'anic exegesis. He researched and wrote his PhD dissertation under Dr. Andrew Rippin at the University of Calgary. His dissertation focus was the theme of 'tampering with the earlier scriptures' as developed in the earliest commentaries on the Qur'an. He also has an M.A. in Hebrew Bible and has completed several years of research in Indian Islam toward a doctorate at Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. In 2011 Brill Academic Publishers published Gordon's monograph "Narratives of Tampering in the Earliest Commentaries on the Qur'an." In recent years Gordon has taught on Islam and the Qur'an at Associated Canadian Theological Schools, the University of British Columbia, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, the University of Calgary, and Columbia International University.

Excellent...Excellent read...Dr. Nickel has done excellent research on this subject and calls us all to the table to reason together...
There is lots of superficial discussion of this subject but none has gone as in as detail, with as much love and respect for the other. This book addresses many false assumptions that many people have about the relationship between the Abrahamic faiths. READ READ READ!!!!!

This is a must-have-volume to whoever wants to study Islam and Christianity seriously. Dr. Nickel carefully surveys scriptural studies, both of the Qur'an and the Bible, to answer difficult questions raised by Muslims and non-Muslims. This book provides numerous topics that Muslim and Christian may have peaceful dialogues for deeper understanding on the contents of both scriptures. Read the Qur'an and the Bible! This was a great help to me

Very impressed with the calm, collected attitude the author has towards trying to carry the conversation forward. The author included all footnotes and bibliography at the bottom of the page that contains each respective note. This was a great help to me, and shows the honesty and integrity of placing all sources right in plain view. Many authors bury these things at the end of the book, not to try and hide things, or course, but it's a pain to continually flip back and forth from the text to the notes.

One of the top 10 non-fiction books I've read. I honestly couldn't put it down. It really opened my eyes to the existence of variant Muslim scholarship since the 7th century. There's plenty of sources listed for one to continue their research with the primary sources themselves if one chooses. Very impressed with the high level of professional courtesy and scholarship presented in this book.

Well worth the wait.

It's a very nice commemorative piece. Interesting insights into the brand's history as well as neat "pull outs". Packaging befits the contents...definitely a must for Chevy fans and fans of industry history. It's been a long wait for the book, which should have been released closer to the anniversary.

One degree of separation...

The question is not whether to read the Canterbury Tales, but whether to read them in this translation -- or whether to go for the Middle English with all its difficulties.

I'm a purist. As a Chaucer teacher myself, I'd say read the tales in the Riverside Chaucer or in the Norton Critcal editon with lots of footnotes. But, yes, that is harder, and I'd rather see readers get some experience than none.

So, if you are going to compromise, Nevill Coghill's poetic translation is really as good a place to go as any. You will get the basic sense of Chaucer's verse; you'll get the basic rhymes and rhythms too. This is the translation that's used in most high school classes, and in many college survey classes that don't read the text in the original. It's really a fine compromise -- not only a good place to start, but also a decent trot if you are struggling with the Middle English.

You can find some closer translations of some of the tales online if you look up Michael Murphy's websites. But for all their virtues, they don't have the smoothness of Coghill's renditions; Murphy's translations are not the complete Tales; and it's clunky to print them out. This economical edition is probably still the best place to start with Chaucer, father of English poetry and the originator of comedy in the English language.

In my humble opinion, this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite, Voyage) or the iPhone (4.7 screen or smaller).

There is also a side-by-side version of this text, which would be better for a Kindle Fire or iPad, iPhone (5.5 screen).

This has a comparative version and a modern version. It is very easy to read and understand. Middle English although poetic, can be overwhelming. The Canterbury Tales is a masterpiece, and deserves a place besides Shakespeare.

In addition to being a sports medicine physician, he is a certified athletic trainer and a member of the writing committee for NATA certification exams. He earned his BS in athletic training from the University of Nevada in 1992 and then went on to obtain his MD from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 1996. A sports medicine fellowship followed at Vanderbilt University, and he most recently became board certified in 2006. His areas of expertise in the active adult population are knee and shoulder injuries.

The REAL deal about this book...please read before buying.

Ok. I hate to ruin the fun of some people but this book is a collection of science fiction unproven theories and scientific blunders. This book was writen as a joke for childress's intelligent buddies. It is just a book of jokes...Nothing in this book will give you any ideas on accually doing anything anti-gravity. This entire group of books is just enterainment for overly smart and mean people. For instance it says "if you accually read it" you can create anti gravity in your home if you take this gyroscope here do this and that and this...then remove the downward force...Did you see that last part...all you have to do is follow these simple instructions and then remove the downward force...well that downward force is gravity. It took me 3 months to convince my brother this book is fiction. People have brought law suits against mr Childress because this book is a joke...I on the other hand found this book to be very amusing...i loved Dr. Zitenbops(sp) generic anti gravity equation..."STP = the unit of lubricaation" "G = 1 gravity and 1 gravity = 1x10-6 gollygees" "G! = 1 shep,= to 1.37 moecurlys"
The book keeps getting funnier everytime I read it...But if your sense of humor is not like this then dont buy it...THIS HAS BEEN ANOTHER EPISODE OF THE REAL DEAL!!!

This book is nonsense and completely useless!

I bought this book hoping to learn about gravity theories, such as those by Nikola Tesla. I was hoping this book would provide usefull information on building gravity free devices. Instead I got a book that is a circus sideshow presentation of a scientific anomoly.
Do I really care about a Santa Cruiz parlor trick that makes it look like you have stepped into a gravity well. This was a trick, why is it in this book. This is just one example of the preposturous assumtions made in this book. There is an example of a "crucial component" that is simply an escher like rectangle with some holes in it. PAHLEEZE, what hogwash. This book presents theories that the moon does not really exist, and that we never landed there. Does this have anything to do with gravity theories?
This book would have been usefull if it contained information on how to build resonate magnetic devices. Not one thing on ACTUAL gravity altering devices. If you watch the x-files religiously, if you took way to much acid and you don't like reality anymore, if you go to star trek conventions, then this book was written for you. It is consipritol garbage. Everybody knows the goverment suppresses knowledge, big deal. Teach me something new, like anti-gravity. This book will make you laugh for 15 minutes, then you will be angry that you wasted $12 bucks on it

Mon petit cochon...

That means (I think) "my little pig". However, if you buy this book, don't think of teensy, cute piglets. Just think of cuts of pork. And there are some excellent sections on those. If you like pork but have been disappointed in the "other white meat" recently because it's so lean it turns out dry, etc., this is the book for you. My daughter and I took a class at a Sonoma cooking school. It was called "Belly Up!" and was all about pork bellies, how to cure them, make your own bacon, pancetta, etc. So I HAD to have this book because it contains directions for making those things as well as some wonderful recipes. Just to name a few (be still my heart), "Bacon Wrapped Tenderloin with Mushroom Stuffing", "Pork Stroganoff", "Toad in the Hole with Onion Gravy", "Pork Scallops in Parmesan Crust", Asian recipes, Mexican recipes, and (hold your applause) "Sticky Barbecued Ribs" that are slow roasted for a couple of hours, brushed with a wonderful barbecue sauce that can be prepared days in advance. The recommendation is that you purchase your pork at a good local butcher or a supermarket that buys from local sources. It might cost a little more but, in my opinion, if you want to make something special, get special at the beginning. Have I developed a "passion for pork". You bet I have! You will too once "Pig" is on your cookbook shelf.

About the Author

Marianne Isager is the author of Classic Knits, Japanese Inspired Knits, and Knitting out of Africa. She is a textile artist whose knit garments are sold throughout Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Germany. She has had numerous exhibitions of her work in Europe as well as in Japan and the United States and has taught at design and craft schools.

Another Winning Knitting Book from Interweave Press and Marianne Isager

I am a fan of Marianne Isager's knitting books. I especially love her book, Knitting Out of Africa: Inspired Sweater Designs. I also like the books that Interweave Press chooses to print. Thus, it is no surprise to me that, between the author and the publisher, they have come up with another winning knitting book.

Inca Knits: Designs Inspired by South American Traditions has a lot of information about Peru, traditional tapestries and knits from that country as well as information about other art forms. There is instruction in intarsia, different knitting techniques and helpful notes throughout the book.

The best part of the book, however, are the patterns. So many beautiful patterns, so little time to knit. I was dazzled by the colors and know that I'll be knitting some of these projects soon. I especially love the colorful hats, all in traditional Peruvian style. I was smitten, too, with the Andes Sweater, a lovely intarsia pullover in wine, rose, blue and orange. The men's Fish Sweater is challenging yet beautiful in light and charcoal grey with red highlights. The Inca Child sweater is to die for. It is very colorful with rose, red, yellow, blue and white. Any little girl would love it. The Stars sweater is complex and reminded me of some patterns from Poetry in Stitches - Clothes You Can Knit. The Cats sweater, again in charcoal and light grey but this time with yellow highlights, would be a wonderful gift for any man in your life. The Rainbow sweater would make a lovely gift for a child. It's mainly white with some red, yellow and blue highlights with little braids decorating it. The Inca Jacket is zippered and a project I hope to get to soon. It is complex and not a sweater one can knit while watching television or talking. The men's Indiana sweater is a pullover with a short zipper at the top. In brown, dark blue, wine and cobalt blue, it has a lovely Peruvian motif on the sleeves and body.

I am very impressed with this book and am so glad I purchased it. I think other knitters who are in the intermediate or experienced level will also love it. Thank you Ms. Isager.

These are truly stunning and beautiful sweaters! The designs are original, colorful, and beautifully presented and photographed. There are several I would love to make but I do find them a little intimidating even though I am an experienced knitter. Any of the projects would take real commitment to complete. But there is so much here that, even if I don't take on an entire project, I have learned a lot that I will use in other projects.

I do love this book. I think it is her best one yet.

Brilliant designs! Tiny needles.....

This is a wonderful book. The patterns are for stunning designs that look of courture quality. You always hear of "investment" clothes; these sweaters would be investment clothing. They are stunning classic designs you would wear for years, always to a chorus of compliments.

But......they would take a real commitment to knit. They are done in fine yarn on (mostly) US size 2 needles(3mm). Many of them are made of double knitting (two layered fabric). This gives a wonderful opportunity for fine colour-work and pattern but makes the sweaters ONLY for wearing outside in cold weather.

I love, love, love the designs but I am going to take ideas from these sweaters and their wonderful detailing to make lighter sweaters that I could actually wear indoors without dying of heatstroke.

I've never read a travel memoir but it turns out they're kind of my thing! I loved reading A Rooster Crows in Lisbon. The writing style is very descriptive and quick witted. I was laughing and daydreaming about the cafes, art, food, and adventure. I really enjoyed this book and have recommended it several times now. If you want a little brain vacation you should crack open your E-reader fly to Portugal. Loved it!

You would do well to consider this delightful book as your introduction to the sights and sounds of one of the most overlooked destinations in Europe. Accompany the author on a quest to search out the history and craft of Portuguese tile making. (An art form perhaps not familiar to most, but very much worthy of a closer look, who knew)!

Lisbon is an ancient city that is famous for its boundless array of sweeping tile murals, found not only in obvious landmarks such as the many castles, libraries and palaces, but also in an abundance of private and public spaces both grand and small. You may consider yourself not exactly, “into” the particulars of tile making, no matter, the author’s pursuit of beauty and knowledge is an enjoyable journey down a road less traveled, so tag along regardless!

I've never considered Lisbon to be on my travel bucket list but this humorous account told through the eyes of your typical American housewife was inspiring and heart warming. Hilarious encounters, humbling grounded insight, and tile making in Portugal. What more could you want?

Very well done; fills the need for a textbook

I am somewhat astonished at the negative reviews, and must strongly disagree with the rather random issues from reviewers.

I have taught a course in consciousness at the undergraduate level a number of times, and the topic has been of longstanding interest. To be very clear: there is no text comparable to this. Prior to her first edition (2005), the only option was to collect primary readings and book chapters.

Blackmore does a *great* job pointing out the fundamental issues with consciousness without being too dry or clinical about it. She also describes well the major players in philosophy, psychology, etc. She herself is well integrated into the research and has a keen skeptical mind -- she gives fair treatment to all the right modern viewpoints.

If you want a general overview of the topic of consciousness, this is an excellent text to have. The topic draws many, many different perspectives (from neuroscientists to a wide array of philosophers to psychologists to quantum physicists), and there is nothing else that takes a broad picture without pursuing a single agenda. Is there some bias? Yes, there is in a sense. But it's a bias that latches on to the general trends of serious academics today -- for example, you might say that she has a materialist bias, but that is just the way that most serious and scientifically oriented thinkers operate these days. Overall, her perspective is, I think, very objective without losing what is truly fascinating about the topic.

You'll never think of consciousness or the self as you did before. Brace yourself.

Susan Blackmore is sharp and relentless in her quest to unveil confusion and misunderstanding regarding what consciousness is and what -or who- the self is. Her own views take unmistakeable shape as she reviews and examines -critically- the views of some of the most relevant authors on the matter. She includes a section on meditation and the Buddhist view on consciousness and the self. She is one of very few authors that dares take a challenging stance regarding common misunderstandings of the Buddha's teachings. After reading this book, the Buddhist teaching of anatta (no substance, or no-self) reveals a radical and liberating scenario.

You owe it to yourself to take this course

Even if you do not find the topic to be the most fascinating subject in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, you will be surprised and enlightened on nearly every page of this excellent textbook. Practical exercises to expand your understanding of your own experience are combined with recent experimental studies and cutting-edge theory. Best of all, the reader is given everything she needs to overcome the illusion of consciousness altogether! Read the book, ponder the ideas it contains, & practice the exercises. Your life will change.
