Placing genocidal campaigns at the extreme on a spectrum of bullying that begins in socialization's earliest stages, Coloroso (The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander) seeks to strengthen the legal and moral prevention of genocide and to improve humanitarian intervention. Analyzing the plight of the Armenians; the Jews, Roma and Sinti; and Rwandan Tutsis, she marshals solid studies, victim and perpetrator testimonies, as well as her own expertise as a nationally recognized speaker on conflict resolution. Her discussion of problems of definition, political will, and social and psychological persuasion are useful, but her argument can be tedious, despite graphic and distressing detail. Drawing heavily and only semiconvincingly on her earlier child-centered work, Coloroso has a tendency to rely on Power Point–style lists, brusquely contextualized quotations and even a cartoon-illustrated flowchart of bullies and their enablers. Her generalizations can be disturbing—for example, when she suggests Rwanda's colonial past plays no role in the current violence, despite contrary arguments from Mahmood Mamdani and others not cited here. Coloroso's checklist of genocidal prerequisites can also blur into other acts of state-sponsored or condoned aggression and exploitation. This book provides entry into a vital dialogue, but should be considered at best a beginning. (Sept.)

Chilling information everyone needs to consider

This book should be a must read. The ideas presented in this book relate directly to the happenings in our world today in the school yard and on the world scene. Those who ignore history are destined to repeat it and I hope the concepts in the this small book can help us to be more aware and less apt to repeat some of the horrors of our world.

Excellent parallel between the schoolyard and the global community

Wow. I read this book under it's Canadian release name, "Extraordinary Evil: A Brief History of Genocide", which appears more fitting to the subject material. Under either name, this book takes the difficult issue of genocide and parallels it with the serious problem of bullying. Through its use of the "bully circle", it demonstrates the way governments and news media outside the conflict, as well as individuals within the conflict, can make choices to protect the defenseless or perpetuate the abuse. From my perspective as a reformed bully, this book shows the impact these choices make on millions of lives in both arenas. I would recommend this as a great text for high school sociology courses and a must-read for high school counselors, but it also serves as an excellent primer for foreign policy where claims of "conflict" serve as a smokescreen for "extraordinary evil".

History Does Not Repeat Itself - It Rhymes

It's a good book as a starting point and I'd have no problem recommending this to child as young as 11 or 12 or to parents of those even younger. Historically the reach is quite broad. Her focus is on bullying activity as a necessary precursor to especially as much of the books shows how childhood and teen relationships reflect what is going on in the corresponding adult society. It strikes a balance. It does not drill one in graphic horror nor detailed political discussion. Yet it does not shy away from issues such as rape, child soldiers and living with the aftermath. The language is clear and the material gives a well organized overview of what is indeed a difficult subject.

Her thesis is that all genocides are similar in that they are the last worst outcome of a process of delegitimization starting not with violence but through words. We see evidence of this in the relationships between children. "If you have 10 cockroaches (cockroach being a well known derogatory term given by Tutsis by Hutus) in your town and you kill four of them, how many do you have left to kill?" was a math problem given to Rwandan school children in the 1960s. Where mass murder becomes imagined as desired it in turn becomes possible. "If 3 Jews robbed a bank and each got a part of the loot proportionate to their ages...." was a math problem given to German students in 1933. The mathematics of dehumanization becomes the calculus of destruction.

It is Coloroso's understanding of bullying that forms the central core of her book. Genocide is not just the purvey of politicians and armies. Coloroso shows that co-option of the general population is required as well. A bully while being an instigator requires not only henchmen but a hierarchy of active and passive supporters. Additionally they require an active regime to demonizes the target thus loosing moral inhibitions to attack, dissuade witnesses from seeing or believing the obvious and discourage others from acting in their defense.

Coloroso is a former nun and a forceful speaker on parenting and children's issues. I've heard her speak about bullying programs at my children's school. My own copy of this book was obtained at the book launch in 2007. Members of the Armenian community were there too, and I made a commitment at the time to find out more about what happened to them at that time.. (You will see some of that in my upcoming reviews.).

Having no background in Economics, it's the vision part of Strategy (predictions based in fact) that had me speculating about a kinship to a novel--an alternative reality also created from a set of facts. Yet Strategy is a science with laws, not an art form. Dr. Vladimir Kvint explained,"The main law of Strategy is the Economizing of Time. If you are late, you lose a certain amount of resources. But you can be first in the niche of opportunities." Intriguing. Dr. Kvint builds a crystal-clear theoretical foundation of strategy that is universal in its structure and can be applied to any “strategizing object” as long as the object is defined. To my knowledge, it is the most comprehensive coverage of theory and history of strategy as well as practical aspects of strategy in future and global context.
This book is intellectually very stimulating and inspiring. There is neither a fast path to nor a quick fix for strategy. Reactive pivots or quick fixes cannot be part of strategy, unless they are foreseen, and hence, well prepared. As the main variable in strategy is time, it takes time to build a time enduring strategy. The reason Kvint gives in his book: “…by its very nature, it (strategy) is multidisciplinary, by its influence, it is multidimensional, and by its structure, it is hierarchical.”
A prospective strategist, who is searching for practical aspects of strategy formulation, will find well-written guidelines in part II: “Strategy in Practice”.

Good Supplement - Possible Recommendation

I teach AP CSA and have looked at all of the most current AP prep books in hopes to finding a quality one for all of my students to use and recommend to buy. I just received my book today and spent the past hour scanning it. First, when I received the package and opened the book, the first 15 pages had their corner folded, which is not acceptable when shipping a brand new book. The topics are laid out well with thorough explanations of concepts, but not necessarily all of the detail required. Each topic has basic and advanced questions. Advanced are definitely worthy of AP-like questions and the basics; some are, some aren't, but the basics can be a great way of leading in to the advanced. The practice exams at the back look great as well and I appreciate the free response practice items throughout - this is an area this book thrives over others.

In short - if I am going to recommend a book for students...
Explanations - Barron's 7th edition - sometimes a little more confusing, but has more detail or 5 Steps to a 5 - easier to read, but you will miss some key minor details.
Multiple Choice - Barron's - there are more, harder, and detailed explanations for each section.
Free Response - 5 Steps to a 5 - they have a lot of early ones to ease students into it and explain very nicely results for an "open-ended" type answer.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I would love more than a handful of multiple choice questions per topic. I also do not appreciate having pages bent before I even open it.

This is my real response, not influenced by anyone but myself and I bought this book with my own money. :-)

An excellent resource

The authors really have tried to include everything that could help a modern student prepare for the AP exam for Computer Science A. My teen will be studying independently for the exam after taking a year long course and the tools included in the book are extremely helpful.

First of all, the book recommend that you use McGraw Hill's test planning app to customize your study schedule. The app gives you a day by day schedule and also extra practice questions.

To figure out where you stand, you take a diagnostic exam that is half the length of the actual exam. This allows the student to figure out areas of weakness which they can focus on in their preparation for exam day.

Another thing my teen likes about the book is that there are two levels of questions for each subject area - basic and advanced. Books that are filled with only advanced questions can be intimidating and this book does manage to make the topics seem quite accessible.

Beyond that the book has all the standard topics - structure of the exam, each topic explained, test taking strategies, explanations for multiple choice as well as free response problems, Java code Solutions, 3 practice tests and errors to avoid.

All in all, this a well planned an thorough guide written with today's student in mind.

Lots of great information

First, let me say that this is for my son, as he is the one taking the AP course and I thought this book will be helpful. We've only had it a week but so far he is enjoying it... or 'enjoying' it as much as a kid enjoys during doing work during summer break! Since he won't be taking the actual exam for quite a while, I can't yet say if it helps his scores on the AP but I do believe that if he does all the book has in it, he'll definitely fare much better than without it!
It has 3 practice exams as well as a free app to customize his study schedule. This is incredibly useful, as my son easily gets off track so every little organizational idea or app truly helps!
Inside the book it is broken into many 'steps'. Step 1 is to set up the study program as well as what you need to know, and frequently asked questions about the exam. Step 2 is to determine your test readiness and encourages doing the diagnostic exam. Step 3 is all about strategies for success and step 4 is to review the knowledge you need to score high, going into various concepts as what is java, software developer, OOP, Choosing your IDE, and others. Here the book really dives into the information and covers many concepts and breaks down the chapters in the framework of these concepts. Finally, step 5 is titled Building your Test-Taking Confidence.

Also incredibly handy and useful is the appendix. It is filled with goodies, such as a quick reference guide and list of keywords in Java as well as other aspects in addition to an area that lists other online resources.

Both my son and I are excited to utilize this book and I do hope it is truly helpful for him! It looks like a good, well-organized book that will help keep him on track and aid in a successful year and exam!

Not the best...somewhat incomplete...gives broad brush

Frankly speaking, I am quite disappointed with this book.
When I bought this book, I had the impression that it is about the protection of intellectual capital. Also, I was attracted to the book because of an introduction by Robert Kiyosaki, whose work I am very familiar.
Although the book gives a broad brush about intellectual property (IP) protection from many different perspectives, and offers some useful guidelines to help protect your intellectual interests, it is somewhat incomplete as far as the protection of ideas or intellectual capital is concerned.
It does not give any specific illustration and/or example on how to protect your intellectual capital from the standpoint of goodwill, reputation, expertise, (especially accumulated practical skills), data and know-how...more specifically, your ideas and/or "working methodologies" which are embodied in products and services.
Take an example from the book, on page 58, under Utility Patent Protection, the author talked about:
"Business method is patentable if:
- it produces a useful, concrete, and tangible result; and
- it is novel and not obvious;
but the book stops short of giving specific business cases or product examples to illustrate this key point. This is, to me, intellectual capital, and I want to know how to protect it!
As a matter of fact, the author talked about how he came to know Robert Kiyosaki...from the CashFlow game. Funny enough, the author did not even bother to give any detailed account on the IP protection scheme pertaining to the game. Nothing at all, period. I thought this would have been a very appropriate subject, because of the need for the protection of intellectual capital behind the development of the game - and the gameplay procedure - from pirates.
The book listed a lot of other IP stuff, which were not covered in the book, but the author directed the reader to his website. For example, the author introduced his IP self-audit checklist, among other things, which sounds interesting. When I checked his website, I realised I had to fork out US$129/- to buy a CD-ROM containing the stuff.
My overall personal impression of the book is that both Michael Lechter and Robert Kiyosaki are using each other to sell each other's products and services! (which are well-illustrated on many end pages of the book!) The poor reader is expected to fork out more effort and money...maybe that's why the Rich Dad series of products are so lucrative for the author.
On the whole, this book falls short of my personal expectations. I am very disappointed with the author and also, Robert Kiyosaki.
To be fair to the author, I feel that the book, even though it is incomplete from my personal viewpoint, still provides a broad-brush about IP, - especially on copyrights, patents,and trademarks, - from many different perspectives.

Keeping Sole Ownership of Your Valuable Ideas!

Protecting Your #1 Asset is one of the most helpful introductions to the legal side of intellectual property acquisition and management that I have seen. Few who are not intellectual property attorneys have this knowledge. As a result of ignorance, many well-meaning individuals make substantial mistakes that cost them substantial incomes. This book will "alert you to the pitfalls that can strip the rights from the unwary."
This book covers the primary ways to protect intellectual property, including trade secrets, utility and design patents, mask work protection, copyrights, trademarks, and trade dress. This is done in the context of maximizing your revenue and income by creating protected intellectual property and creating competitive barriers, while minimizing the risk of receiving and being harmed by third-party claims against you.
The book's set piece is Robert Kiyosaki's experience with inventing what he called a "shoe pocket" which was Velcro and nylon wallet that is now called a "surfer shoe." Mr. Kiyosaki did not protect his idea, and was soon put out of business by competitors who copied and outperformed him. The book then goes into a number of horror story examples of how simple mistakes can cost a person or a company its intellectual property. Some mistakes can be as simple as not properly dating invention notes, while others can involve "abandoning" the invention by not continuously working on it.
The book gives you a lot of guidelines of what you need to do to obtain and retain protection, and helps you understand the pros and cons (and availability of these protections).
As someone who studied intellectual property in law school, I found the book impressive. I intend to recommend it to those I know who are developing intellectual property but have limited knowledge of the field.
The book's main weakness is that it doesn't give you a sense of what the costs are related to these protections. If you have intellectual property worth a billion dollars and lots of cash now, that's not a problem. Go for the best protection! On the other hand, if you have something that you're not sure what the value is and not much cash, you may want to take the less expensive routes. Top intellectual property legal advice will usually cost hundreds of dollars an hour. A worldwide patent position can cost well into six figures in dollars. So if you need intellectual property counsel, get into those cost issues at the beginning of your relationship. If trade secret and copyright protections are enough, the advantage they have is that they are not very costly to obtain and maintain. In seeking out intellectual property help, do try to find an attorney who is experienced and has educational credentials in the field in which you are seeking protection for your work. A small percentage of the bar (less than 5 percent) is well qualified to work in these areas as Mr. Lechter implies. Within that small group, one person in 30 will probably be much better suited to your issues. Take the time to find that person.
After you finish reading and thinking about this book, I suggest that you also consider how you could build a business out of just creating intellectual property. That business model may be one of the most valuable in the decades ahead.

Teaches the basics, if you can get through it

Background: I've read all of the RD books, 6 of the Rich Dad's Advisors series, and other books by the RDA authors. For all of the RD/RDA books, I have found the conversational style to be very readable and an effective manner in which to convey information. With this book, however, it was a struggle to get through it. In terms of readability and value, this is the worst RD book I've read.
Coverage of Material: I am not knowledgable about IP law, and I felt that this book provided a basic coverage of the issues.
Organization: One frustration I had was that a lot of material was repeated, and obviously so. Rather than organizing the book in a more efficient manner, the author instead chose to repeat certain passages. When I've paid for a book, I don't care for the same half-page passage repeated three or four times.
Writing Style: The first part of the book was well written. I especially liked the initial horror stories and phone conversation, both of which were written in a conversational style. If that style had been maintained throughout the book, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars. However, the writing quickly degraded to being almost unbearable. Some parts of the book were written with a condescending tone, and it seemed that Mr. Lechter was stroking his ego. I also found the lengthy discussion on the Internet's structure to be tedious and unnecessary, perhaps a filler to increase the page count. This information was not relevant to the subject; a one or two page summary of the Internet would have been sufficient.
Other Comments: I've enjoyed Robert Kiyosaki's books, but as a whole they are full of contradicting information. This book was no exception. In the foreword, Mr. Kiyosaki uses the same quote three times, wording it differently each time, and giving two different references (Rich Dad for two, himself for one).
Bottom Line: I read this book because I want to read all of the Rich Dad and Rich Dad's Advisors books. In general, although a few of them are blatant advertisements, I've learned something from each one. In the case of this book, I would strongly suggest you find an alternative, unless you want this book because of the series affiliation. Legal primers available online provide a better value.

Deborah Adele holds master’s degrees in both Liberal Studies and Theology & Religious Studies. An ERYT500, she carries yoga certifications in Kundalini yoga, Hatha yoga, Yoga Therapy, and Meditation. She is also trained as a Gestalt practitioner and a Somatic Educator. For over 14 years, Deborah brought her combined knowledge of business and her in-depth knowledge of yoga philosophy to build Yoga North, now a thriving yoga center. Currently she is writing, teaching, consulting, and engaging her own personal practice.

Deborah worked for three years as a consultant with a firm out of Boulder, Colorado, where she combined the concept of body and breath with organizational development skills to improve leadership and management in various businesses around the country. She wrote a regular wellness column for the Duluth News Tribune and has authored two CD’s, The Art of Relaxation and The Practice of Meditation. Deborah currently owns Adele & Associates, a company whose goal is to increase clarity, productivity, and right-living in individuals and systems. Deborah is a keen and innovative thinker, and, in whatever venue she finds herself, consistently uses her knowledge and training to support others in living a life imbued with balance, clarity, and well-being.

In addition to her business and yoga experience, Deborah has made several trips to India for study and exploration. She feels it is important to continually ask ourselves the question, “What does it mean to be human?” by putting ourselves in places we can be challenged and changed, by telling ourselves the truth, and by sitting in some form of prayer, meditation, or reflection daily.

Deborah currently resides in Duluth with her husband Doug, a Lutheran minister, where their conversations around spirituality remain lively. Her life is enriched by their two sons and four grandchildren.

Really great book

In my opinion, this is the best and most important book on yoga to be released in a long time. Why? Because the ten yamas and niyamas -as specified by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras- are at the core of yoga and (I believe) essential for real personal growth. And yet they are given cursory treatment by many if not most yoga teachers in the west, who seem unaware of the subtle facets and profound qualities of these "jewels." And they are ignored by many of today's mental health professionals, who seem unaware that modern psychotherapeutic approaches are embedded in yoga's prescriptions for "ethical" practice of restraints and observances. Somebody really needed to write a book on this! And I must say, Deborah Adele really delivers the goods.

Take for instance, Adele's chapter on Satya (truthfulness, honesty). It is a work of art in its own right, offering the wisdom and clarity one needs to liberate powerful forces within oneself. In this chapter, Adele includes the sensible yet unusual insights of Carl Jung, Yogiraj Achala, and Mahatma Gandhi, among others, along with her own hands-on understanding. In the process, Adele addresses, for all of us, the fear (dangerousness) involved with being completely truthful, the differences between "Nice" and "Real," the epic partnership between truth (satya) and nonviolence (ahimsa), and the value of conducting our own Gandhi-esque "experiments" in truth.

There is so much more to this chapter than the glimpse I've given here, but I hope I've communicated the fact that this chapter (and the book as a whole) has great depth and breadth. It is evident that Adele has immersed herself in the yamas and niyamas, emerging with lessons, teachings, and insights that could be of value to anyone. Highly recommended. I learned plenty.

The author's website provides lots of useful supplementary material, including some excellent video overviews, radio interviews and discussions. I liked the fact that Adele SOUNDED like a gentle, wise, effective person.

I confess that I have a bias here. I believe that my own life has been influenced, and even transformed, whenever I've aligned with the yamas and niyamas over the last 15+ years. And as a result, I was in the process of writing my own (first) book on this long-neglected topic, emphasizing how it relates to progress in psychotherapy. Well, I still think there's a future in that book! Suffice it to say that I share the author's enthusiasm for her topic.

Great aid for my Yoga Teacher Training Course

This year I am doing a Yoga Teacher Training Course, its 420 hours all up.

First up in our course we laid the foundations, which is the studying of the Yamas and the Niyamas. I loved them, they made total sense to me. What a great set of guides to help you steer your life.

However, my notes didnt go deep enough for me. So I googled Yamas and Niyamas and found this book.

WOW. Its a wonderful read for anyone, even if they arent studying. I love how she expanded on Ahimsa, non violence. It runs so much deeper than I imagined. I used to be a "rescuer" when my friends were in trouble, now I can see how what I was doing wasnt helping them and how I can support them on their path.

Deborah, thank you for writing such an awesome book. Children should study these guides in school!

A Godsend!

First, a disclosure. The book's author, Deborah Adele, is my yoga "guru" and friend. I also wrote the haiku that appear at the start of each guideline in the book. That said, "The Yamas and Niyamas, Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice" by Deborah Adele, has been a godsend to me. I have been teaching this course for a few years at the yoga studio where I am affiliated. For the first few years, I was teaching from the only book we knew of (which shall will remain nameless). The more I explored these guidelines, the more frustrated I became with the book we were using. It was not as helpful to me and the class as I wished. I was looking for a book that would encourage the reader to use events from their daily lives to explore these guidelines and that demonstrated a deep understanding of these ethical practices. I felt I had to work to hard to make the book speak to us. I said to Deborah, "You should write a book about the 10 guidelines." She said, "I am."

The book that came has met all of my expectations. It is readable, applicable, spiritual, and also beautiful to look at. The questions at the end of each guideline are there for one to explore at whatever depth one would choose. Although I have first taken this course, and then taught this class many times, using the book and my own thoughts and explorations, I always find something more to explore, a gem that takes me into greater insight into my life, giving me the opportunity to free myself from the attachments that keep us from being free and living in abiding joy.

Now I have the joy of teaching a new class focusing on "Managing Transitions: Life Changes With the Yamas and Niyamas," using the book and the guidelines to explore the losses and trials found in aging, illness, and loss, as in death/divorce. The current class participants all are dealing with one or more of those challenges. How rich to be able to use Adele's book as a roadmap as they explore how to integrate these sometimes hard changes into their lives. I am so grateful to the "Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice" for enriching my life as an ordinary human being and as a yoga teacher.

About the Author
Michael Schaper�(BA, MComm, PhD) is an adjunct professor at Curtin BusinessSchool, Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia, and is also deputy chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Michael was previously dean of Murdoch Business School and head of the School of Business at Bond University, and held the foundation professorial chair in Entrepreneurship and Small Business at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has extensive experience in the area of small business through his previous roles, which have included appointments as Small Business Commissioner for the Australian Capital Territory, and as President of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand. Before his academic career, Michael worked for several years as a professional small business adviser in Australia. In addition, he ran his own business and was involved in numerous other start-up projects. He holds a PhD and a Master of Commerce degree from Curtin University of Technology, as well as a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia. Michael is the author or co-author of eight books, all in the fi eld of business management, numerous journal articles and has been an occasional columnist for The Australian Financial Review , The Australian and Business Review Weekly .

Thierry Volery�is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Director of the Swiss Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. From September 1999 until 2002, he was Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management at EM Lyon Business School, France. He was previously a senior lecturer in Entrepreneurship and International Business at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. Thierry has been a visiting professor at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai and at the Graduate School of Management, University of Western Australia. He has served on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Small Business Management , the International Small Business Journal , the Journal of Enterprising Culture and the International Journal of Educational Management . He holds a doctorate in business economics and social sciences from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. His research interests include the nature of entrepreneurial work, the health of entrepreneurs and innovation in small fi rms.

Dr Paull Weber�comes from a banking background, where he directly managed over 40 staff and a portfolio of high net-worth business owners. He began his academic ‘sea change’ in 2001, completing an Honours degree, a research Masters degree and his PhD in six years. He has taught management and marketing courses in small business management, entrepreneurship, marketing communications and marketing principles. His research activities have been concentrated in the areas of mature entrepreneurship, lifestyle entrepreneurship, small business success metrics, organisational commitment and intranet effectiveness.Paull has contributed several book chapters, journal articles and case studies in the disciplines of entrepreneurship and tourism. He is currently the lead investigator in a long-term initiative to benchmark small business performance across all industry types in Western Australia. He is also the deputy chair of Business Foundations, a business incubator, advisory and training organisation that assists more than fi ve hundred businesses each year.

Dr Kate Lewis�is a senior lecturer in the School of Management, and a research associate of the New Zealand Centre for Small and Medium Enterprise Research, at the Wellington campus of Massey University, New Zealand. She is also an associate fellow of the New Zealand Work and Labour Market Institute (Auckland University of Technology) and a vice-president of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand. Her research is primarily focused on entrepreneurship and small fi rms, and she has a particular interest in youth entrepreneurship. Other areas of work include enterprise policy and business assistance, environmental management and small fi rms, gender and entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurial identity.
