the book is great, the content is sound, but it works ONLY if BOTH partners WANT for the marriage to work... so, that said, I cannot vouch for the effectiveness since my husband had already made up his mind to leave for another woman, and NO amount of counseling or book-reading or life-changes or begging was going to change his mind. Best wishes to other couples going through troubles, I hope that you will BOTH commit completely NO MATTER how difficult it seems, how enticing the "other" person outside your marriage seems, and no matter how long it takes-- the easy way out is the door. It takes courage and GUTS to stay and make it work. victors never gave up while there was time on the clock.

I had to get this for school but the author is interesting. He has a different writing style. Very conversational and the information is essential to my career.

If you are taking a class that uses this book, find another class. If you entire school is using this book, demand otherwise.

This is by far the worst book I have ever used. The book spends most of the time discussing issues that are common sense such as "Taking a customer's Order" or "Bill the customer" In a chapter devoted to Sales and Collection Process in the AIS environment. Which might seem reasonable. But then asks questions like:

In a systems flowchart, which of the following is most likely to be depicted with a predefined process symbol?
a. Browse catalog
b. Make bank deposit
c. E-mail client
d. None of the above.

The book defines what a predefined process is in Chapter 6. But gave no examples of it. So I have a infer from the little tid bits as to what the correct answer might be.

Here is another question from the same chapter.

Which of the following internal controls should Bonnie implement in the first step of the sales/collection process?

a. Data encryption
b. Separation of duties
c. Lockbox system
d. Bank reconciliation

Again no support for this question in the chapter. It talks about internal controls, but never mentions which one should be first,

After two years of job seeking, he has become desperate enough to commit murder. He conceives a plan to weed out the competition for the job he wants. He ends up stalking and killing a number of people who have better qualifications than he for his dream position. The premise could be believable, but I felt the author could have done more to develop the gradual loss of morality in his character. The reader never knows what kind of man Devore was before the downsizing. The story begins when Devore has already apparently suffered through two long years of agonizing disappointments. He has become a murderer in his mind at the time the book opens. Later into the book, the author does go back and fill in some of the missing development. He also shows how the numbing of Devore's values has affected his marriage and the way he handles the situation when his teenaged son gets in trouble for burglary. The book definitely had a message. I'm just not sure I liked the message. I didn't find Devore to be very likeable, which to me, was the weakness of the story. Nevertheless, I think it's a very well-done book, and I recommend it to those people who will look for a deeper meaning as well as those who will just read it as an adventure. I'd enjoy hearing from other readers, to discuss what you thought of Devore's character...

A MODERN DAY MORALITY TALE...

What do you do when you are over fifty years old, and the company for which you have worked for nearly a quarter of a century is downsizing and gives you the ax? One would think that you would simply get another job. Wrong! In this era of corporate downsizing and fierce competition, that may be easier said than done. Ask Burke Devore.
Burke Devore, unemployed now for nearly two years, would like nothing better than to get a job commensurate with his experience as a product manager for a paper mill corporation, but as I said, competition is fierce. Desperate in his quest for the american dream that seems to have turned into a nightmare from which he cannot wake, his middle class life is spiraling out of control. He must regain control by whatever means necessary. Burke Devore, thinking out of the box, simply decides to eliminate the competition...literally. Our erstwhile serial killer is mad as hell, and he isn't going to take it anymore.
This darkly satirical and provocative novel is a veritable page turner. Moreover, there is an underlying social commentary that permeates the plot, which serves to make the reader complicit with the protagonist, as he moves forward with his deadly agenda. Well written and original in concept, it makes for a book well worth reading, especially by those who enjoy mysteries and novels of suspense.

A very different Donald Westlake novel.....

As I started through this novel,I kept finding myself listening to the rational and sympatheituc justification for becoming a serial murderer and finding it somewhat compelling. Because the focus of the book, Burke Devore, a downsized paper mill production manager seems otherwise normal, even "someone like us", you become caught up in the madness and nearly find yourself tending to excuse it. Will there be a day of reckoning for the innocent lives so callously taken?? That my friends is one of the beauties of the book. It is unsettling reading...but it sure could happen. I hope Mr. Westlake will return to his previous style of writing, but he sure has proved his versatility.

Great.....But can be much better

If you're interested in aviation well, this is the book for you.. It's a comprehensive visual representation of the history of aviation.... and has almost every major aircraft type from the Wright flyer to the F-22 Raptor

however it lacks the following aircraft:

1) The Boeng B-29 Superfortress
2) The Dassault Rafale
3) The A-26 Invader
4) The Hawker Typhoon
5) Later variants of the Spitfire

It would have been much better if certain pictures had not been split across 2 pages (i.e. aircraft like the F-14 Tomcat, FW190 and a few others). The cut out of the F-16 is shown larger than the cut outs of the F-15... & the A-20 Havoc (a medium bomber) is shown larger than the B-17 Flying Fortress & B-24 Liberator (Both the latter being heavy bombers)

Dimensions of all aircraft such as Fuselage length, wingspan,empty eight, maximum take-off weight should have been included for all aircraft...

Certain aircraft have not been dated properly.. for example the Seafire Mk.XVII is dated 1941 but in fact it appeared only in 1944..

Certain carrier based aircraft like the Seafire & Wyvern are shown with the wings folded obscuring the fuselage...

I'd have surely given it 5 stars if the issues mentioned above hadn't existed......

While the book is great for my son, who is into aviation, but the book was used or at least somewhat damaged at each of its four corners! This book was advertised as new, so I wrote complaining and I got 50% off.

About the Author

Barbara Miller is Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs of the George Washington University in Washington, DC. She is Director of the Elliott School's Institute for Global and International Studies as well as Director of two of its affiliated research groups, the Culture in Global Affairs  Program and the Global Gender Program. Before coming to GW in 1994, she taught at Syracuse University, the University of Rochester, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, Cornell University, and the University of Pittsburgh. For over 30 years, Barbara’s research has focused on gender-based inequalities in India, especially the nutritional and medical neglect of daughters in northern regions of the country, and sex-selective abortion. She has also conducted research on culture and rural development in Bangladesh, on low-income household dynamics in Jamaica, and on Hindu adolescents in Pittsburgh. Her current interests include continued research on gender inequalities in health in South Asia and the role of cultural anthropology in informing policy especially as related to women, children, and other disadvantaged groups. She teaches courses on introductory cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, development anthropology, culture and population, health and development in South Asia,  migration and mental health, and global gender policy
Barbara has published many journal articles and book chapters and several books including  The Endangered Sex: Neglect of Female Children in Rural North India, Second Edition (Oxford University Press 1997), an edited volume, Sex and Gender Hierarchies (Cambridge University Press 1993), and a co-edited volume with Alf Hiltebeitel, Hair: Its Power and Meaning in Asian Cultures (SUNY Press 1998). In addition to Cultural Anthropology, sixth edition, she is the author of Cultural Anthropology in a Globalizing World, third  edition (Pearson 2012) and the lead author of a four-field textbook entitled Anthropology, second edition (Pearson 2008).
She launched a blog in 2009 called anthropologyworks where she and other contributors present informed opinion pieces about important social issues, , a weekly feature covering anthropology in the mainstream media, and other features. Since its beginning, the blog has had 30,000 visits from people in over 150 countries. You can follow her, along with over 5000 other people worldwide, via Twitter @anthroworks and Facebook. good mainstream comprehensive treatment

I got this book a few years ago, used, from here. In a few weeks I will be taking an online Cultural Anthropology class which does not use this text; but since I had acquired this text due to already owning its VangoNotes, I am trying to do a little self-learning. This also includes review as I took an Into class 30 years ago in this subject.

The prime author is a faculty at GWU and has a few other texts currently. As experience with the theoretical construct of the "science" is what I am trying to acquire, the fact this is a 2004 edition and the audio came out in 2007 does not seem to be too important in 2012. However, with genetics, my main studying background, I think it would, and would if I was focusing on genetic anthropology.

Good text.

As a student, I really found this textbook interesting and an easy read. Probably not a book I would have read outside of class, but now that I have an academic interest, I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted to learn about culture.
