The Big Bang to Now: All of Time in Six Chunks, by Terry Herman Sissons Ph.D

If you are among the many who think of billions, or a hundred thousand, or tens of millions of years ago as all just “a very very long time ago,” The Big Bang to Now: All of Time in Six Chunks will be an enlightening surprise. Terry Sissons divides time into six chunks - fewer numbers than are in a telephone number - to create a review of the 13.7 billion years of all of time. The surprise is that learning just these six chunks can transform one’s understanding of time from grand confusion to quite amazing clarity. The Big Bang to Now is not packed with dense pages detailing what scientists have learned about our past. These details are important, but learning too much detail before one sees the big picture often leads not to knowledge and understanding but to bewilderment. The Big Bang to Now tells the story of time in less than 100 key events, and with a large amount of reassuring white space. Each page describes just one important event, like the Big Bang, the creation of our solar system, the emergence of life on Earth, man’s first appearance. A facing page bullets important points and ongoing questions that are alternatively fun, fascinating, and thought-provoking. As a result, the book leaves the reader with a coherent structure within which new discoveries and learning can be fitted into the larger context. It also makes it possible to answer many questions without looking up the answers at all. Questions like: • Did early man hunt dinosaurs? • Was the universe ever completely dark? • Where did the atoms and molecules that make up our bodies come from? • Did hunter-gatherer societies have writing? • When did we start to use the wheel? Or start to wear clothes? Or domesticate animals? • Will Earth ever have another Ice Age? If so, when will it happen? How long will it last? • Why are some animals extinct? What causes extinctions at all? Whether you think our past can help us make better decisions for our future, or want to decide if the discoveries of science deepens or contradicts religious belief, it’s a book that reveals a sometimes baffling, sometimes brutal, always amazing universe.

Easy Reading, Big History
By Herman
I have three books at the moment on my desk - "Maps of Time: An Introduction to Big History" by David Christian, 'Big History: From the Big Bang to the Present' by Cynthia Stokes Brown, and
"The Big Bang to Now: All of Time in Six Chunks" by Terry Sissons. Each one achieves a different goal.

"Maps of Time" is 642 pages long, and is written by an historian with a highly-detailed grasp of this complex and challenging story.

"The Big Bang to the Present" is half as long and with less detail, it is more simply written and more accessible.

"The Big Bang to Now" is 270 pages and is written by a cognitive psychologist who has applied the research from this field to break down the 67 billion years of all of time into six comprehensible chunks. For the reader whose understanding of history could not say when dinosaurs, snails, or elephants have inhabited the planet, the best book to begin with is Sissons' "The Big Bang to Now". The cover says it is "Big Time for the Non-Genius," and it could be a book For Dummies. It is easy to read, easy to understand, and absolutely fascinating.

When I tried reading Christian's book some time ago, the information was overwhelming and confusing. Having read Sissons' book, I now have a structure of time within which to fit the details provided by the professional historians, palaeontologists, astro-physicists, and anthropologists.

My recommendation to readers like me who are beginners in Big History is to begin with "The Big Bang to Now" by Sissons. It will make the other books easier to appreciate.

The Big Bang to Now - All of Time in Six Chunks-Big Time for the Non-Genius by Terry Herman Sissons, Ph.D.
By elizabeth c. bastasch
This book is immediately accessible for the average reader without a science background. The author divides time into six big chunks and tells us about each one: Chunk I: The Big Bang; Chunk II: The Dinosaurs; Chunk III: Age of Mammals Begins; Chunk IV: First age of Homo Sapiens; Chunk V: Farming, Cities and Civilizations and Chunk VI: Modern Life emerges in the last 600 years.
Each chunk is further divided into even smaller pieces.

On the left hand side, the author takes one point and explains it clearly and concisely. On the facing page she elaborates using examples, agreements and disagreements among scientists, and unanswered open questions. This method makes a big subject understandable in a 270 page 9 X 6 paperback book. The typeset and layout make for pleasant reading.

The book ends with possibilities for the Third Millennium, further reading about each of the topics covered, and lists web sites and blogs on the internet both scholarly and popular.

I learned something new on every page! It is amazing that someone with this kind of knowledge of such a vast subject could make the history of our universe so understandable and compelling.

Excellent Read and Reference Book
By Venantius
The story of the universe from the first nannosecond to the end of the 20th century. An enormous amount of knowledge presented in easy-to-read form and simple but non-patronizing language. It's an excellent means of familiarizing oneself with the cosmological, geological and then biological evolution first of the universe, then of our planet--a bit like those films that start out from the widest possible angle in outer space and keep moving in until they are focused on the smallest ant. Even with a text as easy to read as this one, I have trouble keeping the different geological and evolutionary periods straight--remembering them at all. But that's where this book comes in handy as a reference work and starting point to explore the subjects more in detail. And the author provides a useful bibliography to do just that.
