The art of argument (rhetoric) is, like all the arts, based on craft. This book offers a valuable grounding in the skills of that craft, the tools that are there to be used in it, and the ways that mastery of this craft can free you to achieve the artistry that guides thought and moves emotions. Beginners will find this a valuable guide to what they must learn to progress to mastery. The experienced, no matter how skilled and experienced they may be, will find a useful reminder of basics and some new insights into familiar techniques that can broaden and deepen established art. As one would expect in a book about written communication, this one is clearly written. The style is crisp without being dry, authoritative without being didactic. I found that I was approaching it as a reference book and then getting engrossed in it as if it were a chronicle. Troy Simpson LLB(Hons) is CEO of Research One Pty Ltd, a multi-award winning company that provides specialist legal analysis, research, and writing services to lawyers worldwide.
At his firm, Troy has worked with leading Queen's Counsel and Senior Counsel to prepare winning arguments for some landmark cases, including major constitutional cases. Turning theory into practice and taking it to the courtroom

I reviewed this publication in both its draft and final forms. As a legal researcher I recommend this book as it illuminates many of the intricacies of case presentation that many lawyers overlook. As a practising lawyer I found the practical approach employed highly beneficial. I was able to put the techniques into action quickly and successfully.

Two things I like...

Two things interest me about this book. The first is the way the publishers have built a suite of products around this book. For example, once you buy the book, you're entitled to a free newsletter, a free 60-minute audio on how lawyers can save time, a logo to display on your website, discounts on 3rd-party products, and other special offers. This seems to me to be the future of publishing.
The second thing that interests me is the chapter on plain language. It's important that lawyers have a good vocabulary so that they can quickly get the point of what they're reading; but it's just as important that lawyers use plain language alternatives when they can, so that their audience can also get the message clearly and quickly. That's where the checklist and software in chapter 10 can help.
