Lacking Lowcountry Charm

After waiting with great anticipating for the release of Dorthea Benton Frank's newest novel...I regret to say this book was a true disappointment! Yes, ladies... I'm in my fifties and hardly found anything to relate to while reading this book. I never once experienced the "Oh I can't put this book down or I can't wait to see what happens to the main character in the next chapter." Previously, Frank's books have been a true beach read for me, while mixing in lowcountry charm that would wisp me away while reading on the beach. This book starts out dark with a death almost from the very beginning of the book and then transitions to a desperate woman on the prowl in search of a meal ticket! I mean really...are there that many women still so desperate in today's society? Unfortunately, I could relate to children being unappreciative, but the pot smoking plot and men barging in demanding material objects at a total strangers house was also a stretch for me. At various times, I found myself thinking...did she really write this book or did someone else pen the novel and she simply allowed her name to be put on the jacket. I ordered the book first and then realized I would be at the beach where she was scheduled to do a book signing. I've always wanted to attend and get an autographed copy. However, that would have been another 50 dollars on top of the original book purchased. Basically, after finishing the novel, I'm glad I didn't waste additional money. My aunt has met Frank and talked with her at a restaurant on Sullivan's Island, so naturally I felt compelled to attend a book signing or luncheon after listening to her rave and rant about the opportunity to meet and talk with her personally. Overall, I can't help but wonder if one of my favorite author's hasn't ran out of material to write about concerning South Carolina. Has she lost touch with reality and women? Essentially, I find it hard to believe that I'm so off base concerning this novel compared to other readers that gave outstanding reviews of the book! Are these readers just continuing to blow hot air or did they really enjoy a bad attempt of a mystery? In the future, her books won't be considered an automatic purchase!

Silly and unbelievable...

I usually look forward to reading anything new by Dorothea Benton Frank. If I read it while on vacation in the South Carolina Low Country, it’s a real bonus. Unfortunately, I found All the Single Ladies both silly and unbelievable. I’m sorry that I spent a dime to purchase this novel.
Lisa St. Clair is a divorcee, working as a nurse in Palmetto House, a senior facility. Palmetto House also has some hospice beds, and St. Clair becomes friends with Suzanne and Carrie, who regularly visit their dying friend, Kathy Harper. When Harper passes away, Lisa, Suzanne and Carrie become a threesome, and one of their first jobs is to empty Harper’s apartment. She has no relatives and has left everything to Suzanne. But it doesn’t take long to suspect that Harper’s landlady has stolen Harper’s most valuable possessions. Much of All the Single Ladies deals with various issues—mostly Lisa’s. She is estranged from her adult daughter. He ex-husband moved to Montana to become a survivalist. She’s only working part-time and barely making ends meet. And although only one of the friends claims to be looking for a man, they are not giving up on finding Mr. Perfect. The three also help Suzanne with her 99-year-old grandmother, Miss Trudie. But the delightful Miss Trudie and her beach house on Isle of Palms can’t save this story.
I had more than a number of complaints about All the Single Ladies. First, Miss Trudie starts falling and Lisa comes to the rescue, trying to make her house safer. Lisa is a nurse. The FIRST thing she should have done is see that Miss Trudie sees a doctor or even goes to the ER. The falls could have been caused by blood pressure or blood sugar problems, or even mini-strokes. Lisa and friends are constantly going out for meals, and I hope that Benton Frank is getting kickbacks from all her name-dropping. It got tiresome after awhile. I believe that this book gives the wrong message to women—that they can only find complete happiness with a man. And the shooting scene was just way over the top.
Dorothea Benton Frank is still one of my go-to authors, but I think I’ll start checking them out of the library.

Mom's rigid moral high horse chased her kid - and me - away!

I've loved Frank prior books, and the maturity and angst exhibited by her characters. This one was written in such juvenile fashion it's hard to believe it was written by the same author. And so holier than thou! Presented in such a way to assume we all think the same as she. Now we know why Lisa's daughter moved far away, Mom's rigid thinking and sermonizing mothering would have driven any of us away. I was deeply disappointed.
